What if,..
What if an (unnamed) a&r person said to you they were prepared to provide you with a 5 figure budget to put together a band, record in studio a, b, or c, as well as the privilege to work with (unnamed) manager, and you would need to be on the road with a demo and band by years end to begin paying back the loan,..

just sign here,..

would you?

well on face value it sounds pretty good, but a lot of it would depend on how I felt about the a & r person and the manager.

Haaaaa! No way! I'm way too old for that crap. I toured for 30+ years and there isn't a flea bag hotel I'm willing to spend another night in. I am at that time of life when I am happy to see the young folks get out their and pay their dues. That's what we called it back in the day. Weather you are paying off a loan or paying for that last tank of gas that will get you to the next gig. You are going to pay. Might as well get some valuable experience on the road and in the studio without worrying about the immediate expense. Sounds like a great deal for someone young and hungry.

thats a great question.good one

first off, I like it.
secondly , I am too old. I hate that.
third , I like to be the A and R guy, which i am in a way with a band I am working with which is basically starting out just like you said. they are recording in a couple different places and i am at this time, kinda the manager promoter already. and the band has almost completed 12 songs in the past 5-6 months, with one single to be released june 24 , next week, we have already set up the first geographic region to release the single and the second area is a syndicated program with a crap load of stations in international areas ( if I told you how many stations we have lined up you would faint or not believe it if I put the number here) I am involved with someone i have known for a long time in the country music scene who has veted the song, and is itching to get it out there in the country americana market. The thing is , the band is being funded by the originator of the band (originally a concept only but has now become a full fledged band and has got most everything in place. so yeah i am that guy and no, i would not do it as a player but am doing it as a manager already. And the amount of time and energy required is taxing . being involved in something like this is demanding and requires a lot of planning and know how and good contacts, which I have. So in some ways, it is happening as you queried here. I hope to see some more feedback on this. but for me and the members of the band, it actually almost happened in the way you described

The country scene seems extremely tough to break into. You really have your work cut out for yourself, Bryon.

But would you all be confident enough your music would sell to take the risk if you were younger?

As a young person, you dont worry about the risks, everything is fresh and new and exciting. you have not been jaded so i would say yes and throw caution to the wind. pay the piper later, learn the hard way. thats how it is done. what else is there

Learning the hard way, Bryon, is usually the best way... usually the messages are much clearer.
