My brief flirtation with midi.
Well, I programmed the drum patterns as usual and synchronized them to some keyboard parts. I did two songs like this: "Within" and She'll Fall".
I don't really like either of them. They sound like they are played by robots.
I asked my son (Cedars of Lebanon) about it, because his sequenced stuff sounds great. He said he spends weeks tweaking everything, adding anomalies to frequencies and to levels so that it doesn't sound canned.
I've got no time for that, no talent for that, and no desire for that.
Goodbye midi. Goodbye computer.
I don't know what's next. There's no substitute for playing live with real musicians who have the same goals as yourself.
Sigh... back to the drawing board.
I have "lowered" my standards though and started to work on a couple of "originals" for the cover band I play with. But these songs are totally derivative retro rock crowd-pleasers that shan't appear here on IAC.
Other than that, everything is great. My foot is healing up and the cast will be off next week, my daughter is visiting next weekend, and we should be in our renovated house this month.
Have a great week everybody!

It's really not impossible to record good sounding live drums fairly simply, as long as you have a place to do it without causing havoc in the neighborhood. If you're interested in doing that I could run through some simple mic'ing setups with you.

Maybe you could find a drummer on here or at http://www.vsplanet.com who could record their tracks and send them to you if you send him your waves....I have been using a drum machine then going back and playing my own drums which consists of drum brushes on a cardboard box. I also have bongos but need to learn how to play them...a friend, Andy, uses bongos a lot on his home recordings, and another dude uses programmed drums but throws in fills etc. and I'm not sure how he does it but his sounds like real drums and he's arranged some of the drum patterns on some of my songs using various drum loops.

Read the link, people. It's the next best thing to a real drummer. Honestly.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Mic'ing lessons from Hugh sound good. I'll take you up on that if I ever find a drummer who has any real interest in my songs.
Beth, the online collab idea may be the most fun for sure.
And Dan, that drum program would be awesome if I was recording to a computer. But I don't have a set-up like that -- I use an old 8-track minidisc system. Looks ideal though, really.
Thanks for the input.

Hey, Chris Eagledood - that's a snazzy ring your "drummer" friend in the video is sporting (lol)...
Lemme know if I can ever suggest a mic setup or two, kk...

I keep forgetting to say that I once purchased a MIDI cable and the only use I've ever had for it was to use the metal end as a slide on the lead on my tune "The Lonesome Road" in the midst of a hot session with no real slide to be found...hahaha...true story...

Chris, I know what you mean. Here's my latest acquisition. This guy's playing two of them. They come with two foot pedals (kick and hi-hat close) -- they are going for about $100 on eBay.

HH, haha. Midi Slide!! You goofy guy.
The problem isn't drumming, (I don't know how this blog got off on that tangent.) The problem is playing with machines in general, rather than with people.

Codey: I've followed your music more than you may think (by my station adds, I mean). You've always been an inspiration to me for the yes-we're-really-playing-it stance.
Hewey: Go for it!! The man-versus-machine blog. It could spark even more controversy and longevity than Steve Ison's reincarnation-versus-religion debate -- that was a whopper!!!

Thanks for your support for the real thing!
