Name-calling
I have noticed that recently I have been having diffculty with establishing song titles that are catchy and relevant (that I like). I also have to think about titling the new album I am working on. I was just wondering if others have a specific formula for creating song titles (song phrases, themes...etc) I also would be interested in your most unique or favorite titles.

Dance to your own tune...

I like to go by the catchiest phrase in the song, not necessarily the most repeated phrase.

Example: "Lipstick and Pills (On Skin and Bone)"

It's got to be more intuitive than logical for me.

I usually find the title comes to me as I write the Chorus, It usually is never preconceived.

The one thing that is liberating when it comes to Song Titles is that you are not limited... as a Title cannot be copyrighted, ANY song title can be used, nothing is off the table. It happened to me when I wrote a song called "Walk on By" , I realized there was a famous song by Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach, but the lyrics just stuck so I went with it. It kind of wrote itself... As for Phrases, ,my approach is to match the melody; the phrase must be able to be sung in a smoothe, non foeced manner. I find this very important, sometimes more importaznt then the words themselves :)

Good Luck in your quest! Jeff

I usually try to make sure the spelling is correct too! (Hate that)

Hey Jo Ellen,
I am pretty good with catchy titles. Give me a few sample lyrics and I will give you a few sample song titles to look at maybe this will help get your creative side going. If you like anything I come up with its yours to enjoy.
Cheers

Geez, a song just half-way wrote itself when I thought a little about the title of this blog before reading the blog itself. Thanks!!

I can't claim any special knowledge or skill in the title department...I do have a gripe about song titles that do not come from the lyrics, as I often can't remember the title (lol)...example: the Beatles song from Revolver that starts, "Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream..." In fact, I can't think of the title right now, and I've probably looked it up four or five times in the last year (lol - DUH!)...other than that I find titles reveal themselves mostly. Sorry not to be of service(!)

Ok Ken, this is for you. i have to say that this is a spiritual song as you will see.

Storm clouds gather dark and quickly
And sometimes the journey seems
Too long to bear in stride

When faith waivers
And you have lost some ground
Take heart my friend,
That's nothing lost that can't be found

Sing it out, sing it over Jordan
Sing it out, Sing it over Egypt's barren land
Sing it out, sing it over Jericho's walls
On Galgotha's hill, He conquered all.

(Lyrics by Jo Ellen Tarbox (C) 2008)

Hugh-

I have never titled a song outside of the lyrics and i was actually toying with the idea as more of a thematic or conceptual statement, but I can certainly see how this can be problematic if one can't remember the title but does remember some lyrics. For the above song I come up with....

"Sing it out"
"He Conquered All"

OR

l something like... "Battle Cry"

The bridge of the song is as follows...

Oh I hear a battle cry
A mighty warrior
Rising up inside

A shout of victory
In a land of much dismay

The hand of promise
From a God who makes a way

(Lyrics by Jo Ellen Tarbox (c) 2008)

I say this a bit tongue-in-cheek, as one well-meaning musician to another, but there is some truth to it - your proposed titles strike me as immediately revealing the genre, with the possible exception of "Battle Cry" - that is of course perfectly reasonable and might be best...but you might trick more infidels such as myself into clicking play (lol) if you go a little softer on the title.

One's art is intensely personal and I suspect we all agree that it only works when each artist follows their own heart / muse...!

Now, as for the title of the album itself the following titles are currently included

Sooner Than You Think
Rejected
"Battle Cry" (tentative)
Grace for Me

Actually, as I make this list I think "Battle Cry" might work as both the title of the song and the album... (brainstorming)

Any suggestions?

Jo Ellen,
As per your updated comments with Hugh.

This is what jumped out at me

Lost and Found (I like this one)
Sing it aloud or sing it out
or as you said Battle cry is another good choice.

Hope it helps.
Cheers,
Ken

Hugh's got it.

"Nothing Lost" also alludes to the victory you are singing about as well as the faith that seems to be vulnerable.

Perfect IMO.

I try to mention some sex act in every song title. Or at least imply it. The grungier the better.

It's hard to know for certain without hearing the whole song but I'd go for;
"Sing it"
or
"Sing it out"

both work

Ok, just found it called "Battle Cry" on your artist page and think
"Hear The Spirit Say" (from before the first chorus) might work if you add that phrase before each verse .. it also makes it clear that it's a spiritual (religious) song
