preventing chest congestion
Does anybody have suggestions for this problem. I seemed to bet irritation but then it seemed to turn to chest congestion and I've been taking the strongest Mucinex available, however is this just a bandaid fix to the problem? How do you prevent heavy chest congestion that makes it so you can't sing?

Hi Beth

Do you think it may have something to do with pollution in the city. If that was the cause, may be it might be a good idea to look for a diferent venue for your singing for a while.

Have you ever tried singing in restaurants or up market coffee shops or maybe inside shopping malls. Anywhere where the air quality might be better.

Move to the Bahamas! But...in all seriousness...I'd encourage you to consider if you may have allergies or asthma or both. They claim to have made some strides in understanding and treating asthma these days (though I remain a bit skeptical). In my experience with my children respiratory issues can be very confusing and a bit of a crapshoot, but asthma can be one of two things, (1) a constriction of the airways or (2) inflammation. Triggers can be cold, allergens, exercise...stressing yourself out on top of that by singing aggressively could be getting you in a bad feedback loop if asthma has anything to do with it. I ain't a doctor, just offering a tidbit to consider.

Cheers,
H

Hi well I have had allergies in the past...but when I go to the pharmacy the pharmacist seems to rule it out if I don't have itchy eyes etc. All I have is the chest congestion...I have had this problem before. I do live in a big dusty house which could be part of the problem...housework is not my forte. This problem emerged as the weather changed from summer to autumn...The strongest Musinex has alleviated the problem and I plan to go play today, first time in over a week...so I have rested around 10 days...
I am fairly new at this, just got over stage fright after a year of open mics to play the subway (I have sold about 20 of my CDs down there and have had folks tell me they love my stuff so it's good exposure) & finally became comfortable behind a microphone having put many hours behind one. I had one offer from someone to play a coffeehouse and I didn't do it because it was the next day and I didn't feel prepared (she said I was fantastic and more than prepared after listening to me do maybe 5 songs). For many of my songs I am still using cheat sheets (I added a lot of songs and no time to memorize), and to do a coffeehouse I have to play maybe a couple of sets....when playing the subway I have a revolving audience so I can play what I think will work so it is a little different. Maybe I just need to practice doing thorough sets.
I have learned the hard way that I have to discipline myself to play maybe 3 or 4 hours, perhaps 5 at the most (playing between trains so it's not straight) maybe on a Friday or Saturday, and get out of there...a few times I stayed there from say 1pm to 9:30pm till I almost dropped and this without enough water or a bathroom break which is very bad for the voice and I will not do it again. I also like to hear live music in bars for entertainment but talking over noise in bars is very damaging to the voice and makes you hoarse, so I have to be vigilant about not talking over noise; hard to do when friends want to talk. When I go to these places I go to hear music not to talk, but it's a social event as well.

I'm all for turning to the pharmacist but you might benefit from some prescribed meds, Beth. Only a doctor can help with that, obviously. I'm asthmatic myself and I can tell you that getting a good H.E.P.A. air filter and a regular schedule of vaccuming and dusting does wonders for my airway. Might be the same for you. If you are asthmatic, perhaps something as simple as a couple of puffs of an aerosol medication every now and then could keep you clear. I myself avoid doctors like the plague but sometimes there's nowhere else to turn!

:)
