Hi Deb, I would have to look the "S" word up to see if it was right [words always look right to me]

I'm glad you didn't ask too far ahead :)

2 years is probably just about enough time for me to listen again to everything I've written - at least 3 songs a week for the past 3/4 years ...I want to find the best songs from the past and bring them up to standard - The earlier songs I wrote were more unique and creative melodically and structurally.

Because I'm almost entirely electronic I may have to form relationships with 'real' musicians if I want to keep going for 5 years. I've reached the limit of my technical desire - don't want it to feel like real work. I'm very stubborn learning new things.

I don't want to do this for money, but to leave a legacy for my future family. I love the idea that one day my Great Grand kids would unearth something weird of mine and realise what crazy stock they spawned from and what a raver I was in my day:) haha!

....To quote John Lennon: "Life is what happens while you make plans" [or words very similar].

So, I know from my life experience that you never know what's around the corner and that lots of things happen as if someone 'up there' is arranging it. Also, most of what happens is meant to happen for a reason.

To answer the quezzie - I don't have a clue or a specific plan other than to follow my heart and go with the flow.

Musically, things are evolving naturally and very positively and my hopes are to recover whatever monies I put into my music and to put the profits into making more music. I see any financial gain from my music as a direct reflection of other people's approval of it - they like it enough to buy it and hence support my further efforts.

I have discovered that I have an ability to mix and so I want to further develop that in Apple's LogicPro/Studio - I see a mixer/sequencer as another musical instrument.

Obviously I would expect to be able to play better as time goes on.

In 2 years, I would like to have learned to play the piano at least half way decent and to have some recognition as a good independent producer among Hip Hop and R&B artists.
In 5 years, I will have retired from being a flight attendant 2 years before after 20 years of service. My wife and I bought 2.5 acres of some beautiful land in Southwestern Colorado with some of the most awe inspiring scenery I have ever seen. I will have a small getaway/retirement home there with a nice studio as a part of it. The private land where we bought the 2.5 acres has a 4 mile lake for fishing, you can hunt elk, see wild horses and has a landing strip for you future famous IAC artists to land your private planes/jets to come see me for collabs and to relax!!!

Good question! After recently finding out My Mom has Stage IV Lung Cancer, the answer has changed drastically. Each day is a Gift, and our lives can be turned upside down in a heartbeat.

I will keep an eye on the future by funding retirement accounts, advancing my career etc, I will also make time to hopefully grow as a Musician writer..

My day to day goal is to enjoy every day, experience the Joy and wonderment of my one year old Son Aidan, be a good husband, and spend time with My Mom and family as we go through her disease with determination and love.

We must have goals, but we must enjoy and appreciate the present as tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Let me tell you why I still believe in Fairy Tales
well now, Once upon a time I met a girl said she could teach me to fly
and there's a school of fools with rules forever stuck in never-never land
but if you'd like to break free, you just look deep into my baby blue eyes

and then she took me by the hand and oh lord how we soared for awhile
yeah I saw all the things appear that I believed in back when I was a child
and she showed me that I didn't need a set of hallowed wings to fly
and that true paradise can only exist in the eye ... of ones own mind

In 5 years:

Plan A - Will have broken into the music biz and be making my living doing what I love.

Plan B - Will not have broken into the music biz and will be at the age where I will have to give up the dream of being a famous musician and create Plan C.

Hi Deb, Cubase is a mutitrack software sequencer, although its very complicated, its also flexible enough for most users to get a result of sorts,
It will record midi data, for instance you can play licks or whole tunes from a controller keyboard, and then use the recorded midi data to trigger alternative sounds for playback,
You can assign different channels to different instruments,
You may also import midi data, (just google midi files) and there is an almost infinite editability about cubase.
As well as midi, cubase can also handle wav files, so you can layer wavs and midi.
I think Nuendo which Jilly mentions also has the capacity to import video data, to produce multimedia.(although I have not used nuendo)
Here is an old track I did round about 2001 with an old version of Steinberg Cubase Vst 2.x
Cuban Blues

I should also add, that to get the best out of Cubase, you really need a good pc, fully optimised for music production,
Cuban Blues was done with a p233 mmx, and the gm sounds on a soundblaster 16, not exactly pro gear.
But the great thing is, that once you have made your midi-file with cubase, you can then import the file into a decent machine for a more realistic production.

Steve, I'm trying to learn Cubase now. They have a new Cubase 4 out which looks phenominal!!! They have self teaching lesson books on Cubase where you go step by step in creating and mastering a song. I believe if you look under "Thompson Course Technology" in Google, you'll find a bunch of books on Cubase. I have one from them called, "Reason 2.5 Power". They have a list of great books for Nuendo3, Cubase and I think Pro Tools as well. As soon as I can afford Cubase 4, I'll be getting some of those books. Everyone says Pro Tools is the industry standard, but Cubase is running a close second. I know of some serious bands that use Cubase and like it better than Pro Tools.

Also Steinberg, who makes Cubase, has come out with a basic learning program called, Sequel, which is a very basic Cubase program. You can upgrade to Cubase4 from Sequel as well.

I was quoting John Lennon but my own experiences still tell me loud and clear that in spite of what you plan in your life, the totally unexpected can happen.

Logic Pro (latest version is Logic Studio) is the industry standard, not Cubase nor the once very popular ProTools.

It's equivalent to Mac being the standard in the creative world - Cubase is more of a Windows equivalent.

Cubase was getting closer to Logic but the latest Logic version 8 from Apple just blows it away. Which reminds me I should be doing some editing rather than posting here.

Fair enough, and very true. I still believe though that if you're not proactive in life, life indeed happens to you instead of the other way around.

After three years straight of family tragedy and illness, I hope that in two years I'm selling suntan lotion and renting jet skis in some little out of the way fishing town in Mexico!
In five years I'll look back at those three years with a heart not so heavy.

....Agreed - I think it's best to be proactive in life. I was interpreting John Lennon's words to mean that things can happen irrespective of being proactive or fatalist.

With all the changes that have a happend to me over the last 6 / 9 months, looking even one year ahead seams like a long way.

What I would like to have acheived by the ned of this year is to have writen enough songs for my planned "third solo" CD. Hopefully started recording it. And increased my income from music to the point where I'm comfortable, comfort here is minimal, just not having a near financial collapse every third month would be a start. Increasing the number of solo gigs I play is the main way I will acheive this, band gigs as well, but the fee is never 6x the solo so band gigs are more for fun, not that I don'y enjoy the solo ones of course.

There a song writing project I'd like to see start with a friend of mine, but can't say too much about that till we've had a good chat about it.

To be exact in Johns words

"Life is what happens when your busy making OTHER plans"

"Other" is very important....we can be very"Proactive" ....Plan, work hard, set goals, all the while life passes by. I believe what John means here is to enjoy Life and all it has to offer. Notice the little things, the wonders around you.Spend quality time wih loved ones, family, and friends. No matter what we plan, the future is not set. It is very important to set goals and work hard, but I believe we should always appreciate where we are now, the little blessings that come our way, ......

Tomorrow is a gift not yet opened......and we will never again have today.

Jeff

....Thanks, Jeff.

I shall now remember to include the word OTHER whenever I use that quote.

Your words perfectly describe what, in my opinion too, is by far the best way to live.

Thanks.
