regarding tinnitis
I was at a friend's studio not so long ago and he was demonstrating a tone-testing CD for me, sort of a room analysis frequency thing, anyway, when it got to sounding off around 12k, the ringing in my ears disappeared....really flipped me out because I've grown accustomed to listening through all that mess. We began speculating about a sound-generating implant.

Has anyone here investigated tinnitis alleviation?

Have you ever had your Tinnitus evulated? There are many possible causes and treatments although an actual medical or surgical cure is not presently available.
All tinnitus involves some hearing loss usually in the high frequencies. The brain creates a sound that is usually ringing or hissing because it trying to compensate for the hearing loss. By using a hearing aid you can bring in more ambient sounds that you aren't hearing now and those sounds can mask the tinnitus. There are also hearing aids that in additon to helping your hearing can also create a white noise masking sound that also covers up the sound of the tinnitus at the same time. These new digital hearing aids are not your father's hearing aids. They are on the cutting edge of science and can do amazing things. Since most people with T have trouble sleeping, you can keep a noise-masking device (or a large fan) next to your bed that produces a white noise that blocks out the annoying sounds in your head. What you are talking about is a new technique called Phase Cancellation but it doesn't work for everybody although if it works for you, congratulations! Ear infections and loud noise are the two main causes of tinnitus. Some people have it only once and a while and other hear the TInnitus noise 24/7. It is one of the leading causes of non-fatal injuries in troops returning from Iraq and can be a disabling condtion for many. A leading pharmacutical company claims to be testing a new that drug supposedly cures Tinnitus but won't be available for two years. But sometimes Tinnitus can be caused by something treatable like high blood pressure or other medical condtions. That's why it's important to have a complete workup to see what health factors might be causing it but the major cause is usually exposure to one loud noise like an explosion or loud music over time. Natural hearing loss from old age is another factor but many young people are getting it now because of listening to music at levels that are dangerous to the ear, especially through earpieces or headphones. If anyone else has any specific questions, I can probably help.

Mine is caused from Chronic Lyme Disease though so probably not much help out there for me, but still.

I always wear ear plugs if i go to a gig with big sound rigs. And when mixing i always keep it at a sane level. I bought the best speakers and amp i could afford so it,s clear at low volumes without the need to crank it. Prolonged use of headphones is another hearing killer it so easy to crank it up and not notice how loud it is because your hearing start shutting down to compensate so you keep cranking it. This is the advise my doc gave me after i was getting whistling sounds in my ears days after loud gigs. In fact he told me to stop playing live altogether which i did but this is impossible if it,s your lively hood no easy answer for that one. There is specialist earplugs that cut out all the harmful frequencies they are expensive but worth it because there custom made to fit your ears. Ear implants are a stopgap at best and just asking for trouble in the future. How to know if your hearings going sit in a silent room if you hear any whistling or wind like noises coming from inside your ears it,s maybe time to see a specialist You don,t want to be learning sign language at 40 or 50. Watch It,s all gone Pete Tong it,s a very scary film if your a Musician or DJ there is no way back once your hearing,s gone this film describes it very graphically.

I have recently read a lot about tinnitus being alleviated and in some cases cured using specific sound therapies, so your experience is no surprise to me. Try a google search for "sound healing and tinnitus" and check out some of the results... you may be pleasantly surprised. Sound healing is a most powerful form of therapy, especially as we vibrational beings and sound is vibration. Hope you find some relief!
