When is it time to retire a song? Ever?
Some of us just keep piling songs on top of songs. Some of us seem to go out with the old in with the new. Some of us seem to wipe the whole slate clean and slowly rebuild.
I've been wondering how you decide when it's time to retire an old song. When it starts slipping in the charts? Does it hurt to have a lot of songs on a page? Is it overwhelming to most people? Is less actually more? If you have fewer songs do the ones you have get played more than if you spread your listeners over more songs?
These are just some things I have always wondered about. Just looking for thoughts and opinions.

I dunno..I used to have about 20 songs on my page, but just left up 4 (tho the others are around on stations)
I sometimes find it really daunting if someone's got tons of songs up..If its an artist i've just discovered and they've got maybe 3 or 4 i'll check them all out..If they've got about 20 i might not listen to any more.
But there's a few artists here (like THE HAPPIES) who i really wish had more songs up....

Hmmm - good question! Again, I guess it's going to be different for all of us. For me, it would be when we have more than 6 songs on our page.

Since we started the All Songs Options Page, I leave like 7 to 10 songs on my page based on a theme.
So far I've had the singing harmony with myself theme, the hard rock theme, the songs about bad people theme, and the love song theme. I also change my page color, main image, and bio with each theme. heh

I like to see pages full of songs ... guess it comes from Lp days ... I like to hear the whole Album ... I often find songs I like on Artist pages that have been picked up by very few stations ...
Sometimes I find I don't care much for the first few songs, but then I hit that gem...
I have often found myself liking an Artist because of this..
I don't listen to music to be in a rush... the world has enough of that already..

From the new perspective of a browsing shopper, I'm finding it frustrating when folks don't have ALL of their songs posted AND available for sale, because I've been going to pages intending to buy a specific song. But I agree with the idea that a long list of songs is impossible to "process" as a 1st-time visitor. I suppose it all boils down to what your personal goals are, and what role this site plays in your "master plan"...

" what role this site plays in your "master plan"..."
I get the impression from this quote that Hugh's plan is to conquer the world....And I think he has a much better chance than good old Napoleon did!
Personally, I joined IAC (and other sites) to get my music "out there" ....Yeah, Yeah, Yeah....I know my music is "out there"....(*wink*)
So, if I write a song and I like it....I am going to upload it.
As far as going to an Artist's page and finding the same songs there in the same order......This is why I would DESPERATELY LOVE to be able to "drag and drop" to reorder song position on my page and on my Stations.

That would be nicer than the cumbersome numbering system, but at least it can be done. Dragging to re-order is such an obviously intuitive method I'm sure they're working on it, or waiting for the capability to be introduced in java or whatever they are programming in. I don't think I've seen it anywhere on the web.
But it sounds like there are as many opinions as there are artists, so I'll just have to go with my own, once I decide what that is.

We have the full quota of 30-------and when we add a song we remove one to make room-----but it's impossible to "promote 'more than 1or 2 songs , so some good ones just sit there-------with not many plays!
I always put the most popular one at the time, on top, until it starts to slip.
My favourites don't always, get to the top--------I thought "Firefly' was just our best ever------we put a lot of effort into getting the "slightly amatureish" mix, so you felt like you were in the room with the guys----but "Gonwana" just blitzed it so we went with that!
also we have hundreds of MP3 and Wav files so ooooooo-----???

Good questions which I wondered about myself. Here's my two cents.
i listen to everything if there's a few songs up or less.
If I have to start scrolling I sample each song for a minute or two.
Sometimes i tire of a singer's voice if there's too many up, but I my appreciation only grew and grew as I checked out Grand Jury. I samnpled many of the toons but will probably return for further listening.
POSTING LYRICS ALWAYS MAKES ME LISTEN LONGER, so don't be lazy. Start typing! We need a format for adding chords then I'd try playing along. How about posting a PDF on your gallery? Any other ideas?

Some good questions asked here, Stegosaurus. Things I've been wondering about too. Here's my two cents on song lists:
I listen to everything if there's only few toons up. I prefer this.
If I have to start scrolling then I sample one or two minutes of each and return for closer listening later if I'm interested.
I always listen longer IF THE LYRICS ARE UP. So don't be lazy songwriters, start typing.
Chords changes would be nice for playing along. If the gallery could accept PDF's for this purpose, PDF's would display type quite nicely.
