Hello! I'm still here! ...Hello?
I've been a member here for quite a while, and I've seen a lot of ups and downs. The thought of bugging out has crossed my mind too, when the direction of discussions veer into territories that annoy me. But instead of leaving, and actually announcing it, I've sat back and waited for the junk to settle, because the one grand topic that always comes back to the surface is music.
I'm not saying this is the best approach. I decided I shouldn't complain about the direction of the Pipeline because I haven't exactly been contributing much to the content. But when political blogs and nonsense banter between insects and fruit end up with hundreds of replies and my humble attempts at coming up with interesting conversation go unnoticed, or I get a slap for crossing some blurry line into a site issue, it's difficult to get excited.
In fact, I'm wondering right now if this is a site issue. But I'm not going to worry about it.
So instead I decided to put more of my thoughts out here and not worry whether anybody reads them or replies to them.
I've seen active (and very talented) members suddenly pull up stakes and leave, with nothing much more than a "See ya, suckers" on their page. I'm also seeing people announcing their departure and reply after reply of "Oh no, please don't go!" I'm not going to do that. If you don't like something, make it better, don't just run away. Where ya gonna go? I've tried looking for other places like this, and they just don't exist.
Now - don't get me wrong. Some folks have other more pressing things in life to do, and feel they must move on, and are saying farewell on their way out. No bridges burned, and I'm sure the door is always open.
Just like in real life there are people here I like to talk to and people I don't care for. There are also people who I had a hard time with but came to have respect for after I got to know them better. Why would I let someone I don't care for drive me away? I find it much more effective to ignore them, and eventually they will go away. Or they stick around and continue their mission, which is fine with me, I just choose not to participate.

Glad to see you still hanging in there, Stegor. I think you've got the right approach, too. I tend to not go into the poli posts, because I get annoyed when I find no one sharing my view- what morons. Just wait until Morey Amsterdam rises from the grave - THEN I'll be proven right!
Sorry, I got a little annoyed. I'm not leaving though (I can't afford the moving van).

Very well said, Stegor. The ugly poltitical discourse will end after the election and as far I can tell there has been a dramatic reduction in the other kind of other annoying posts that you speak of but I think the biggest problem is apathy and a general disregard for people other than one's self. This is not a complaint, just an observation but when I post a link to a new song making it easier to hear it than asking people to go to my page and find it, usually the only people who will click on the link and then comment about the song on the blog are same 3 or 4 people almost evey time and I thank them for that. (sometimes the response is zero comments) I also listen to every song link they post and comment on the blog and/or on their artist page as I try to do for every member who goes to the trouble of posting a link to a song. We do this because we are proactive. We are not passive. We appreciate how much work goes into creating and recording a song, and the excitement of anticipating various responses on the blog. But when these song links are mostly ignored and/or very few comments are posted, it shows a certain amount of apathy. So when you add in the verbally abusive political posts and some of the other wild stuff that goes on (fake farewells and all) it's easy to see why people would want to actually leave for real. It seems the longest threads on blogs are "fight threads". But as Stegor mentioned, it gets harder and harder to come up with intersting threads that people will follow and contribute to that are not controversial or adversarial.
If we want to be an authentic community that stays intact we should be more proactive in making this a supportive environment. Banning certain things is not the answer. Ignoring what we don't like is an answer and supporting things we like IS an answer. Taking the time to actually listen and react to each other's music is an answer. Leaving comments on other artist's pages and listening to and commenting on song links posted on the blogs is an answer. These are the kinds of measures that will keep people from leaving IAC. We can only fight negativity with positivity. There are many proactive members here, but I'd love to see more.

Hi Koze. And Hugo. And Codester (check back on the Rick Wright topic), and Sam (oh sure, make us wait!), and Steve (I loved Morey Amsterdam!), and Richard (you are so right - everybody must read that!)

well, I got cranky wit the moderator one night a took my songs down....
I have a short fuse on some issues, censorship, or what I perceive to be censorship is one of my hot buttons. One of the guys here talked me down from that ledge..
:)
At the time I didn't understand that it would jack the stations that added me, I figure they ran off the same link thats on my page so deleting would just make them....vanish.
So really I'm sorry to all of you who put my songs on stations.
my bad.
But enough of that, I like spirited political discourse and discussion about Art, Religion, Sociology, Ethics, Neuroscience...all of it.
really it informs my music and my life and Musicians have a unique way of discussing these things so I think the topics are entirely appropriate to a site like this. Indeed without them we'd run out of things to say in a matter of weeks.
I listen to nearly every link posted on this forum, as far as song links go. I don't always comment, I don't always know what to say. Raymonds song "Don't Blame The Lord" is an example...I really liked it, it choked me a little even because of a conversation I had with my sister last week...but I don't always say something.
hmmm..
Also I've posted links to songs that have dropped like a rock, but was delighted to see that they were added to stations and had a number of listens, so I know I'm not the only one who listens without commenting on the board here..
To be honest, this place feels like a private club to me, there are a handful of regulars who chat and chatter with each other and even trying to get in on those conversations often makes one feel ...if not actually "unwelcome, at least "barely tolerated".. But whatever, I've been on these OMDs and their Boards since 1997...so it's nothing new to me. And I have to say that I've learned a LOT from other posters on these boards and in the Independent Music Community in the past 11 years. It's completely changed the way I see the world actually, it can do that if you let it.

Hi Stegor. Nice to see you again. I am back from a longish break as well. Mine was due to falling into a big black hole just after Christmas of 2007. It was a deep hole and I hope I can avoid it next time I walk down that road. I do that periodically....... fall into the same black hole. Nothing against iac. I've always loved the people and staff here. We come and go but more importantly, we always come back. love, deb
