Dreams as inspiration
I have always been fascinated by dreams. They are one of my biggest musical inspirations. Luckily I have been blessed with a very active dream mechanism. To make it even better, several years ago I was prescribed a high blood pressure med called Zestril. One of the side effects is vivid, psychedelic dreams. The effect wore off after a couple months, but every night was a trip. I keep a journal of my dreams that I share with friends. They tell me they enjoy reading them. Maybe they're just humoring me, I dunno. Maybe it's boring reading someone else's dreams. You know - you had to be there. But I'm going to throw one out here for the heckuv it.
I was traveling by train. I felt the need to shave so I grabbed my bag and went into the rest room. I dug through it but couldn't find any shaving cream. I coulda sworn I packed some. But on the shelf by the sink there was a bowl full of shaving cream and one of those brushes. I didn't know whose it was but I figured I could use just a little and they wouldn't notice. I covered half my face and realized I was using it all up. I tried wiping it off my face and putting it back but it didn't work. I dug in my bag some more, but no shaving cream.
So I figured I'd just have to go into town and get some. Then a woman behind me asked if I'd get her some pickles. Ok, pickles and shaving cream. Pickles and shaving cream. I got in the car and started driving. It was a real boring trip so I decided to draw a picture while I was driving. I drew an oil tanker truck on a hill. I gave it a hood ornament shaped like the number 7, and drew a big 7 on the side. But it was crooked. So I erased it and made it a Texaco truck instead with a big star. I liked it, but it was kinda boring. So I decided to make it look like it was about to explode and I drew people running away from it with terrified looks on their faces.
Suddenly I realized I was drawing while I was driving - you can't do that! I looked up and I was driving through a field full of wolves. They were scattering all over the place to get out of my way. The road was just to the right so I headed back toward the road. There was a lake in front of me so I had to get to the road before I got to the lake, still dodging all the wolves. Then just as I was about to get on the road a horse ran out in front of me. Oh crap! Where did he come from!? So I cranked it to the left and ended up upside down on the edge of the lake. I climbed out and started crawling up the hill toward the road. The wolves kept sniffing me and licking me and making me real nervous. I kept thinking "All this for some pickles and shaving cream".

Freud said: "Every dream is a wish". Not everyone believes in Freud's theories but he felt that sex was the root of all dreams and the prime force in our subconscious minds that shapes our personalities and the work we do. The Freudian interpretation of that dream is that you were on a journey of self discovery. You wanted to improve your attractiveness so you attempted to shave. A women asked you for a pickle (phallic symbol) and you asscoiate the pickle with "cream" another sexual reference.
You draw a #7 because you think you're getting lucky but you got bored until you became a "star" and had an explosive orgasm. You were driving and in control but you felt threatened by wolves. (Jung said: "You are all the characters in your dream". So you are the predatory animals sniffing and licking around. I don't really believe in this stuff but it's just standard Freudian/Jungian dream interpretation.
You could get at least 2 or 3 songs out of this mess!

Alright! - my dream triggered a Poe and a Freud. Do I hear a Pavlov?
Richard, you're probably not far off. Most of my dreams are journeys, always with obstacles. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but a pickle is never a pickle.

Stegor, when I was first dx with hyperthyroidism I was prescribed Inderal and stopped taking it after the first night (MARE). Whoa, the forms in my dreams from it were PSYCHOTIC I swear, a dog falling through space that had liquid legs with colors like your new pic. Too wild for me.
And I was thinking as you described your dream.. *sounds like a typical night out for Sammy*. :D

Stegor,
I am looking forward to hearing any songs of yours that may eventuate from that dream. I am absolutely fascinated by dreams and the detail in yours is captivating. I feel like I was there with you reading that.
I also keep a dream diary and most of my songs are written based on my dreams. I have a neurological condition you have probably heard of called Narcolepsy and one of the side effects of that are extremely lucid dreams. For me, this happens whether it is a Narcolepsy dream or a normal night time dream.
The most vivid examples of songs from my dreams are on my IAC page and are -
Pyramid
REM
Outside Everything

Your music has to be influenced by dreams, Titania - I don't know where else it could come from. Lucid dreams are the best! I usually keep those to myself though.
And Lace - Nightmares unfortunately hit me sometimes too, luckily only very rarely. When I have a nightmare it can affect me for days. Weird thing about them though is that if I were to describe them they wouldn't necessarily sound any different than another dream. It's just that the FEAR component is there. Or the gross-out component. I really hate those, when you have an image in your head that just won't go away.

Freud set human understanding back by at least a couple of centuries all on the basis of his own warped perspective. I'm not sure his failed disciple Herr Jung was any better.
As for Pickles'n'Shaving Cream...well...it sounds like a band...or at least a song.

Freud may well deserve being mocked, or so it seems, but really, freud was quite humble about all this stuff, his followers made it into dogma.
Jung's synchronicities was good for a Police Album title LOL!!!
Jung's got lots of cool pictures (mandelas, spiral stairs), alfred hitchcock got alot from jung. ya gotta admit "the shadow" wouldn't a been a movie w alec baldwin without jung going on & on and about it...

I've never yet seen a movie that accurately depicted a dream. Why even try. I'm a big Kurasawa fan, but his film called "Dreams" -- forget it, man, not even close.
Even the great painter, Salvador Dali, was a bit of a poser when trying to trying to express the weird juxtapositions and morphing that takes place in dreams.
Well, in my dreams anyway, I don't know about anybody else's.

I'm a huge fan of Dali. He's one of my reasons for being an artist. But I think the artist who has come closest to painting dreams is Mark Ryden:

I highly recommend checking out his website because he's a genius:

Thanks for the tip Stegor! Love dreams, and dreams as inspiration for art. That's why Salvador Dali & Rene Magritte are two of my favourite surreal painters/artists. The thing Magritte added, was the ability to work in MIXED media. BOTH of these artist's work has been used in countless, promos, movies, adds, comix & other artforms....
I'm definitely checking out your Mark Ryden dude-guy. It looks like I'll dig this genius, fo' sho' ! -pHLeGm

In my Spiritual studies, we were taught that dreams are a doorway, a connection between the spirit world and the living world. Dreams help us communicate with our spirit guides, animal friends, loved ones, ancestors...I've had so many dreams of people I've never met, to meet them later in my life. I've had several dreams or parts of them come true. I do listen to my dreams and use them as inspiration behind writing.
My dreams are surround sound, full action, mostly horrific...often feeling like I'm watching myself in a movie. Sometimes it feels like I'm watching something else take place, either long ago something that is yet to come.
Look at Stephen King, his nightmares provoked most of his books and movies. Dreams are sometimes just dreams but I believe in listening to what your dreams tell you. Because you just never know what may come out of it.
