How do YOU rev up for a new recording?
As the Rivergods begin making plans to record a dozen or so new songs, I decided to take a romp through some earlier incarnations to gather some raw energy to bring with me into the studio and found a couple gems in the RIVOLVER cd:
Oceans Edge
and
(Ode to a) Lone Star Girl
...though I must confess, having not played on either of these, I feel a bit like a vampire (no pun intended LOL). Whatever works, right?

Listened to both and OCEANS EDGE is my favourite of the two. Enjoyed it, Diego

Well, when it's time to fire up the Lars Mars machine at Recording Dwarf Studios, I find that trying to write my share of the tunes usually gets me pretty fired up!
Especially since I know that Glenn will have twice as many, and they're usually better songs! ;-)

Thanks, Diego....yeah, Ocean definitely has a more positive vibe to it, as much due to the lyric as the vocal expression Nan gives to it. I do enjoy the lo-fi "locker room" edginess of Ode, though. Happens every time Ben shoulders his SG.
These two are older recordings of earlier lineups and I like the energy there. It's sort of liberating to remind myself that it's OK to pull out the stops and go for it, you know?
Kurt, I didn't know you and Glenn are compadres? Do you guys collab while you're in China, or do you save it all up for your return trip stateside? BTW, I really enjoy what Lars Mars stirs up together.

Well, so far the only collab from China was my adding the organ track and remix on "Get Away Clean".
I'll probably get back with the Mars boys in the summer while on vacation.
Life in China has been pretty hectic, so we haven't yet done an intercontinental venture!

Rivergods - great songs, especially Oceans Edge. The recording and the vocals are first rate. I love the hand claps! How do I rev up for a new recording? I rest!
(also, I don't over rehearse or over plan because I like surprises and happy accidents during the recording process

we rev up by travelling 300 miles to get together--- after months of planning!
---the main thing is to not leave any piece of equipment behind---leo and Jake both bring their desks and we link them
plus once we start we do shifts ---day and night, for fine tuning and mixing---
the most songs we have managed in one 4 day session (day and night) is 5!
(last winter)
all da best----now for a listen------

I know you haven't forgotten Mike. Now that better weather is finally coming, I should make it out of hibernation and get out to a Village Jammers or Rivergods gig.
One thing that used to work (and I should try again) is doing some underwater swimming. It really used to clear out the lungs and build up the diaphram for sustained notes.
If Kurt's planning on recording, I better get busy writing now, but some of my favorites are tunes we put together in the studio.

Thanks, Richard. I know you have a good ear and your comment is much appreciated. I agree with you, too, it is possible to polish the shine off the apple. Happy accidents are where it's at. I don't know how much rest you require, but you seem to be the antithesis of the Silverwoods gang. Marathon men, indeed!
Rob, once you all are finished with your recording session, (shift work notwithstanding) how many days rest do you require?? We ain't gettin any younger, ya know. But who am I to ask......posting at 4am?
Kurt, Glenn, I listened to "Get Away Clean".......reminded me of NRBQ in the Al Anderson days.....their live show was a bunch of fun...they were nuts!
Glenn, look for the calendar on my own myspace page ("hacksaw"). That's where I keep the running schedule for the Jammers, Hoolios (electric and acoustic), Rivergods, and the Sandman. We're bound to find some time sometime, man.

Got it Mike. For locals or those passing through interested in some great music, here's a link:
Mike's gigs
I went to the R'gods page and found this:
Second of all, save the date, March 7th, 2009 as we are putting together the details on a LIVE RECORDING SESSION we are planning to do in downtown New London! That's right... 10-12 never-before-recorded songs, done live in front of a "studio audience"... and you can be there. More details VERY soon.
Is that still happening?

Well Mike, I'll take the NRBQ referenceand smile...they were great back then.
Glenn, I just talked to Ron about putting a real drum track down on She Makes Me Smile, hope you two can crank that up.
Mike, I'll try to get to the USA this summer and catch up with your act(s). Sounds like a blast. Glad you like Get Away Clean, a rare "Live" recording for us.

Glenn, unfortunately, the recording plans have been postponed due to logistics difficulties (almost as difficult as negotiating that durned myspace page....thanks for posting the link). I'll keep you updated on the Rgods project for sure.
Kurt.....I'm looking forward to it. We should contact Monkey68. He's in New London, too. We'll all have a grand old IAC convention! Vince, what do you say?
