IN Defense of Indie Music and Misc. Ramblings.....
HI all, I've been out of the stream lately, busy with that nasty work world, but I have had a chance to read a few blogs, so I thought I'd toss one out.

Firstly, now that the election is finally over, "Can't we all just get along!"...really.

And on the recent blog about IAC being a land of dreamers who are not chasing the almighty Rock Buck, I say "Bravo" to all of the dreamers. At one point in my life, like many of you here, I thought that I would wow the world with my sound and style, the new Beatles, etc., etc.

Well, I didn't...I had a family, a regular (sort of) life, but music is what has always stirred my soul. I was born with it, I'll take it to the grave, and I'm damn happy to put my music here and see that a couple hundred plays a month means SOMEBODY listened, and from those numbers I can assume that some percentage actually liked what I offered. Good enough for me.

If that's not good enough for you, then by all means get out there and hump your ass 'till you succeed or fail.

I'm not so sure I'm thrilled by the IAC cash thingy, I fear it might be counter-productive to what I believe this site represents. It smells a little too much like the old MP3.com site. Also, since I'm not prime, I don't have a pony in this race. But it strikes me that if people get wrapped up in that $12.48 a month thing that the listening is going to become less genuine, with a more silo-ed approach to bump up stats. I hope I'm wrong, but for those of you who remember the MP3.com world, there were a lot of scammers pumping numbers at the expense of the music.

Someone in a recent blog stated that songs were picked up for stations because of friendshiips and reciprocity, implying, I assume, that true taste choices and random listening do not occur. Well, I only know one person here personally (no, it's not Holo ;>), but my experience here has led to some really nice virtual friends who have seen fit to appreciate my small musical offerings. Some have even led to some correspondence and(GASP!) friendship. I point this out because the inference was that this method somehow tainted the selections, or lessened the value of the selections. I believe nothing could be farther from the truth. The Indie world is about networking as much as it is about music. And to those people who accidentally listened to my music and added it to their stations I say "Wow, how'd you find me, and thanks!"

And lastly, there was a lot of ill will tossed around here for the last few months, and I hope we get back to more music, more fun, and more peace on earth....
(Larree, you're still the funniest fucking guy out here....Hugh, my latest guitar should be arriving soon, and Anjuli, whom I've never met or corresponded with, you really crack*me*up with your take on life, and I love your music. Okay, I'm done now)

"Someone in a recent blog stated that songs were picked up for stations because of friendshiips and reciprocity, implying, I assume, that true taste choices and random listening do not occur."

No, what I said was "a fair share" of stations involve those things, certainly not all. There are many station managers who have very high standards for every single song they put on their stations. But there are some who have stations that only include personal acquaintances and of course there are some artists who are more likely to put songs on their stations of artists who have done the same for them.

Thanks, Sam...

I often read and admire your common-sense comments on the various blogs and have rarely taken the time to tell you how much I appreciate them, and how often I agree with you.

You're a perfect example of the kind of virtual friendship I spoke of and value.

So keep on doin' what you're doin'

Kurt

I hope you'll have fun with the new 12-string, Kurt - I did a 12-string song as a joke - it isn't on my page at the moment but it might give you a laugh...inspired by the fact of a 7-string guitar (if I recall correctly only the g-string is doubled, an octave apart) let's see if I can do a link...

12-Strings Baby

(Warning - F-word in passing)

I'm with you in judging the vast majority of station work at this site to be sincere.

Rock!
H

P.S. I'm guilty of getting hung up on "world events" - that's for sure. My general intention is to channel that into tunes, but things are so outta whack lately that it's a challenge for me - I feel a real sense of despair.

P.P.S. (sorry, lol) - and the reason I do it here is that the "friendships" you allude to are real for me too - and this place is like a virtual cafe to me - despite the anonymous trolls the overall experience here for me is one of "real people" engaging in meaningful dialog.

Hugh,

I hear ya...the world is out of whack, thus the whackos are out in force. That said, there's still enough decent souls left to make the world better, and this place more of a music site again.

BTW, you've answered one of the great music mysteries of life for me....I always wondered what a seven string guitar setup was. Hell, I've barely got enough fingers to play six! I was afraid it was an additional note, like a 5 string bass.

Thanks for the note, I can't wait to get the new ax, from ebay, to Glenn in CT, to me in China. I'm guessing a couple of weeks anyway. Half the fun is in the anticipation (ahhh....Carly Simon's smile)

Later,

Kurt

Seven string guitars usually have seven courses (ie seperate strings) not a double G string. Although an individual guitar might be designed like that.

I've never played one but can it imagine it would be great for fingerstyle with access to more bass notes.

See wikipedia for more info.

[edit]
having read my own like to the bottom :-) I notice that the style of seven string mention by Hugh, is refered at the bottom of the page.

I did decide to join, admittedly the revenue from such sources is not enormous but if my listens maintain previous levels it will more than pay for my prime membership. It's no replacement for selling real CDs though.

Well Hi Kurt, thank you and allow me to introduce myself ... I'm anjuli and am happy to meet your virtual acquaintance :) Thank you for thinking about me in a crack*a*happ*a kinda way. And Kurt ... I love what you just wrote, it's right on the money $hot .

So true words for those seeking fame and fortune ( two great tastes that go great together ) I wouldn't mind the fortune but not if I have to become famous to get it ( not that the opportunity is there ... ha ha ) but some of us would vomit in an auditorium ... I can only handle intimate little settings with strange characters slightly dribbling on their lapels shouting play Freebird or demanding something that I don't actually play. It's what I live for ...

I don't mind the diverse array of motivations for making noise ... I just hope there will always be a place and an outlet for the sake of the song, creativity, imagination, community, sharing, healing communication and connectivity and HUMOR which is what music does. It bridges the gaps between vice and virtue and doesn't inflate itself with ethical vanities in the name of itself as music and the art therein are works worthy in and of itself as beauty is to beauty... and rather; these obscure songs we share bridge the lines and gaps between us even without all the hype ... it is tragic to pave a way for the fallacies whilst leaving no place for true inspiration to be found, albeit subjective in nature.

I hope this place will remain such a place ...
