Tightening up the Gut While Singing
You know, I don't do that much, get all that air inside me and tighten that gut while singing...the kind of thing that's taught to be proper, but the fact is, it does work. It's just not as fun, but the result is a much improved ability to hit the high notes. McCartney sounds to me like he does this as a matter of habit, and he hits his notes very well. I think I could hit my notes better than I do if I kept the habit of getting in more air than I do and tightening that gut, but I only keep it up for a short time because it's just not as comfortable and I drift away from it.
But it does work, so I really should try to make it second nature.

Bob ---
often b4 recording a vocal track, I get the artist to run up and down the stairs a few times, to get them puffing----it helps them hit the high notes---!

That's an interesting approach, Rob. I might have to try it. I was fortunate enough to be raised in a choral environment, so I learned to 'breathe' early on, but my range has diminished a little over the years.

My range is poor and my pitching is really bad-even singing with one headphone off...Unless i'm singing live and playing acoustic at the same time..
Thats one thing i've become very aware of now as its been pointed out to me loads by other people hearing my songs on the net...
It usually takes alot of drop ins to get a vocal i'm happy with..
I've never really thought about the tightening thing you mentioned Bob...The main thing for me to get a good vocal performance is to be relaxed..
I've learnt to slip into falsetto for the odd note when its just too high-Thats definitely a technique i never used till recently.........

I joke about various devices applying pressure to the gonads for those high notes...lol...I cannot for the LIFE of me get past a G above middle C, and often can't really hit that. Having sufficient air is definitely key for all singing - I've been dabbling in singing more expressively for a couple of years now, inspired by folks like Nat King Cole and Harry Nilsson, and just this past week for the first time Emitt Rhodes.
I don't quite know what you mean by tightening the gut, but I have a feeling I'd better not be doing that the morning after I eat Mexican food. Which is every chance I get...
