You Never Know When Someone Might Be Listening
I live right next to a park that is owned by our HOA. I go out there everyday and do my martial arts workout. You know? Pushup's, kicks, forms and hand weapons like chucks, Filipino fighting sticks, staff etc. Anyway, before i start my work out each day I always sing a spiritual and pray. Been doing the same routine for about 25 years. People often walk by and i occasionally hear a misc. amen after my prayer. the other day I was feeling very down and in order to lift myself up, I sang a very moving rendition of an original spiritual. I was sure there was nobody else out there so i really let go. After singing and saying my prayers I heard a loud commotion of people behind me praising God and saying amen. When I turned around to look I discovered that there were about 50 people all standing and giving God thanks with me. Later, some of my neighbors told me that they open their windows every morning so they can hear my song and prayer. They said that it blesses their souls to hear me. That, particular day a neighbor had promised others that she would call them and let them know when i came out to work out and pray. Truly, I had no idea that the whole neighborhood wanted to be there with me. Those folks only knew me as the martial artist that works out in the park. When I told them all about my music and accomplishments in music they were stunned. They had no idea that a songwriter/producer like me lived in the hood. That just goes to show you just how bad I am at self promotion. I learned a big lesson. You never know who is listening to you. Might be more than God. Amen? Much Respect, Stoneman

And you thought you were done with doing music in public.
As they say, God works in mysterious ways Stoneman.
Lovely story, thanks.

I suppose that the differnce is that I was not performing. I was worshiping God. No [pressure there. Just bring an open heart and go for it. A couple of them could even quote the day and year that they first heard me singing to God. Then there were those who spoke of times when thy were depressed about life and my song lifted them up. Of course, I refused to take any credit away from the Lord. If they were toucjed, it had nothing to do with me. the spirit moves on its own without my assistance.. But it felt good to hear the stories from people. Of nte is the fact that some of those people never even spoke to me when they saw me out there. They would just walk by like I didn't even exist. You never know what people think of you until talk with them. It was a very pleasant experience.

Stoneman, reading your OP again just triggered a great story from my past!
so I had this lady friend who was actually a close personal friend named Joyce. She was classy and beautiful. One of those girls who you wish saw you as something more than friend but she just didn't, yanno? Anyway, near the end of our run as friends, I said something to her on the phone that she misinterpreted and took as an insult which it was not at all. I didn't know this at the time, had made plans to visit her, travelling from far away to South Philly where she lived. Arrived there that day and oddly, I knew she was inside but she chose to not answer the door. I realized that basically I had taken a long trip to see her only to get basically stood up. So I was in Philly with nothing to do. Decided I was going to blow off some time and come back later to see if she had come to her senses. I went down to this city park, took my acoustic guitar (which I always had with me in the trunk). Sat on this wall and started singing my repetoire of songs, some of my early ones and some Neil Young songs, projecting out from this wall I was sitting on. It was then that this little, say 10 year old boy walked by and stopped to listen, then started to talk to me. I can date this by the song he requested which was the Juice Newton hit, Queen of Hearts. 1981, Almost 50 years ago. heh Anyway he so badly wanted me to play it. I didn't know it but quickly tried a few chords and figured it out. So I sang it for him. Next thing I know there were like 20 people there listening to me, some requesting Beatle songs which I knew many. Made a great day out of the Joyce disappointment.
