Your fav song(s) you’ve written
Of all the songs you’ve written, which one is your favorite and why? (You can name a second song of yours in a very different style than the first one) What messages or emotions were you trying to convey in these songs? What inspired these songs?

FAT LADY
(written in homage to the material world)
This is our favorite improv... a magical moment where the words and music came together so beautifully. This inspired us to continue with our unorthodox musical approach.
PHOENIX
("Phoenix" is "Truth")
THIS is the "First Time EVER" that "my words" had a "song" as their intended purpose. William had moved to South Dakota and at the time I hadn’t any clue whether or not He would “EVER” be returning home here in Louisiana. So, I sent these "lyrics" to him in the mail. He calls me up one day and when I answer the phone he places his phone on the table beside him and just starts singing this to me while playing his classical guitar. This was in late 1990/early 1991. He moved back home here in 1992, so this was recorded by 1993. After he came back is when I got an electric keyboard, a 4 track recorder, mixing board, etc.

Yes Mortimer, I think Fat Lady is my favorite of yours too.
And similarly my favorite is the first one I wrote. As terrible as it was (and it was), I realized that I could write a song. That confidence spurred me to continue and improve and grow.
And when the band liked my songs and joined in, improving them with their (often better) ideas, I was completely rapt.
Then we played them for other people who had never heard them and they not only got it, but liked it. Dancing along, eventually singing along, requesting their favorites.. very heady stuff for a 16 year old.
Thanks for asking Richard.

This one is a little different... There's a movie script here if you visualize the lyrics..
https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=2867239
"Private Jeremiah"
Private Jeremaih, got some news for you today,
it's the final order you'll obey,
You're going back to Gatlin,
there are fields that need be cleared,
and your mama can't do it on her own,
all alone,
Private Jeremaih,
don't you look at me that way,
for you this war is over now obey,
The horse that stands a-waitin,
was your Daddy's finest steed,
he'll give you all his strenght to get you home,
now you be gone...
There's a barn that needs a fixin,
and fences to repair,
and tommorrow General Lee,
ain't runnin nowhere,
Private Jeremaih,
you're a better man than me,
even though you're barely 17,
the men you see around you,
who's lives will surely end,
you'll hear their voices call you once again,
in the end...
You'll see them on the hillsides,
Where the Blue now lies in wait,
Cause in your children's children,
They'll live again..,
Private Jeremaih
there is no more time to waste,
you've got your final order now obey,
The Union Army's ready and so is General Lee,
and you won't be among the gallant men,
Who'll die today...

I didn't care much for this but my singer Daphne was really taken by it thinking it would be a very inspirational song for her AA community. I think the lyrics are a bit weak bur Daphne and Guitar Ray rescued it with her voice and his great solos.. If we had ever gone live this would have been the long guitar solo part of the show. I did do the guitar intro and exit on the song though, that's really the limits of my capabilities.., Oh well.

Great topic, Richard. It's fun hearing songs that are so personal to people.
I think the favorite song I've written is always the next one I'm working on! But, looking back, I have many favorites for different reasons. But I think my overall favorite is a song called "Funny How." I'd been playing a lot of standards from The Real Book and noticing how sometimes a beautiful melodic line would go on for 12 or 13 chords, as if they're not in any hurry to get anywhere, and they want to enjoy the scenery. There are so many 4 chord songs these days. I wanted to write a song that would fit easily in a set of standards. It's a slow, sentimental song, a little old-fashioned, and it's peppered up with clarinet. It might not be as good as the standards, but that's what I had in mind. And what makes this song extra special to me is that a nice gentleman added it to his station, saying that it's the kind of song he wished he had written for his wife of 57 years! He was effusive in his praise and I could tell that what I felt in writing it, he felt in listening to it. I felt like I had finally written something that mattered to someone.

Hi Jilliane, gooda c ya.
Key point: it's much easier on a desktop device.
On the video page you will find a share button. It generates a link so you can pass it on. To add them to the pipeline, you click EMBED in the SHARE options. Copy that entire bit of html and paste it here.
There are other options that appear before you copy it.
***** FORGET EVERYTHING I JUST SAID !!! ****
I just tried it using my phone (Android) and the regular phone share menu appears.
That only works for desktops (which is simple using the instructions above). This really is silly, because Google created YouTube, Android and Chrome, yet the only method I see involves using a desktop display on your phone.
Here's a video that demonstrates, though the menu it refers to goes by very fast. It's the browser menu which may not appear, so you need to be able to find the address bar and it will be the three vertical dots next to the share icon.
I just tried to follow the instructions using my phone, but it was tedious. They essentially make you view it in desktop mode, so it would be easier just to use a desktop device.
There may be a simpler way using an iPhone, but my wife is using hers. I am going to switch to my laptop to finish this.
I thought that using the YouTube app it might be simpler, but no.
shortest how to I could find
It's not you, it's Google.

Hi Glenn, I really appreciate the length you went to to help me. I can put a video on my page but all I can do on the Pipeline is copy the URL or the embed code but they don't make a proper link. I used to know what to do but I've been away from IMP for a long while and it's all lost in my head :) Not to worry, I'm so low tech, I don't even have a phone, probably the only person in the world now haha!

"Guilty"
(C) 1997
I saw a man today,
Put on trial for what he didn't do,
Convicted be evidence,
Of the crimes committed against him,
And all the people watching,
They could surely see,
They all agreed upon it,
So easily,
And though the truth was there,
They refused to see..
They all said guilty,
They all said guilty,
They all said guilty,
But me..
I saw a photograph,
Of the prettiest girl that you could imagine,
But standing next to me,
She doesn't look anything like that,
What was supposed to cure her,
Was now the disease,
In spite of the evidence,
No one else could see,
They all agreed upon it,
Naturally,
They all said guilty,
They all said guilty,
They all said guilty,
But me..
I saw the news today,
About the latest ceremony,
Proclaiming the innocence,
Of everyone who was attending,
And as the night proceeded,
So typically,
So well attired were,
All the liars and thieves,
And though the truth was clear,
No one else could see..
That they all were guilty,
They all were guilty,
They all were guilty,
But me..

Definitely The Passerby. It broke me from a long period of inactivity, but is also probably my smoothest from a writing perspective. It was a bit of a 'song that writes itself' experience. It's a bit of a cynical song about not always knowing those we let into our lives. Framed as a cautionary tale narrated by a supposed concerned narrator, but whether the titular passerby or the aforementioned narrator is the devil in disguise is really up for interpretation.
It's a familiar, trite scene
At the crossroads, barren and swept clean
With no way to take you home
When behold from the far side
There approaches a lone passerby
Who must seem quite strange, all silver and champagne
We'll I'd feel like Robert Johnson
Way back in nineteen-thirty-somethin'
As the sun sets on the plains, and on and on and on they're saying
"I'll only ask you once, and the question's plain
Are you going my way?
Are you going my way?"
"One word will suffice
Just one way or the other, well that's fine
I thought I heard something faint I wish you'd reconsider
I'm from a place you've never seen
I've seen the world in ways you'd never dream
And it can all be yours, just follow me"
"'Cause like I said last time, I'll only ask you once
Are you going my way?
Are you going my way?
Are you going my way?"
Don't take the bait!
Don't take the bait!
Don't take the bait!
Don't take the bait!
"One last chance now, the question's plain"
"Are you going my way?" (Don't take the bait!)
"Are you going my way?" (Don't take the bait!)
"Are you going my way?" (Don't take the bait!)

My fav has to be Spacesuits are for spacemen with Myndi aka Anjuli. Her vocals took what was quite a boring song into another realm. It was our first song together and it was my first song with a real singer on the internet. It was quite the experience working with someone who lived in San Diego USA. And had such experience as Anjuli. I tried speaking to her on the phone it was a complete disaster Scots and American don't mix. We muddled on did other songs eventually met in Brighton UK for Pearls n Tales our last song together. Remixed at Abbey road. Things changed she got married. That was the end
The Old Man outside the gates
Sings of cars and trucks
The Old Man
And how this house would shake when an airliner flew overhead
And how he’s hope and pray for one merciful face to give him some bread
Spacesuits are for Spacemen
Not for here on Earth
Spacesuits are for Spacemen
Oxygen depleted since birth
Too little was understood
Too little was done
Until the Cash Cow was sucked dry
We got pushed back into the darkness never to return
To those halcyon days of excess
Money to burn
I inhale my last free air as I exit these gates
And enter another hemisphere
An un-breathable space
Where the sun is now a distant glow far off in the haze
I keep a picture of my family and home when life meant something more than rage
Spacesuits are for Spacemen
Not for here on Earth
Spacesuits are for Spacemen
Oxygen depleted since birth
Now ridiculed and sanitized
A suffocated Earth
Spacesuits issued, homogenized
For those of chosen worth
With no place to hide and nowhere left to run
We’ve had to face the pain
Where the enemy looks a lot like you and me
With no aliens to blame
Spacesuits are for Spacemen
Not for here on Earth
Spacesuits are for Spacemen
Oxygen depleted since birth ( repeat )
Please replace
Please replace
Please
Please
The Old Man outside the gates
Spacesuits are for spacemen

For me, its a song called "No Color Codes" that I wrote years ago. The writing and production of that song set me up for maybe a hundred more songs because i learned so much about drum productions and chord theory while working on it. It was one of the songs that i have produced over the years that even my strongest supporters could not believe that there ws no band involved. Pretty much a landark song for future reordings. https://indiemusicpeople.com/songs.aspx?SongID=92187&ArtistID=12693

Written from the male perspective but Daphne, our sweet Daphne.., was so moved by it she insisted on doing the vocals herself.

"Life Is So Hard"
Well I like the kind of boys
That you don't take home to mama
Though I'm not supposed too
But I kinda, sorta, wanna
So you got you education
and you got your degrees
and a respectable place is society
With a Mercedes Benz
and your motor's clean
but you need a little more
If you wanna be with me
You see sometimes, life is so hard for me..
Yeah sometimes, life is so hard for me..
You see I like the kinda a games,
That you're not supposed to play
Where there's nothing to buy
And there's nothing to pay..
So you got you education
and you got your degrees
and a respectable place is society
With a Mercedes Benz
and your motor's clean
but you need a little more
If you wanna be with me
You see sometimes,l ife is so hard for me..
Yeah sometimes, life is so hard for me..
(Solo)
Yeah I like the kind of boys
That you don't take home to mama
Though I'm not supposed too
I guess I just wanna
So you got you education
and you got your degrees
and a respectable place is society
With a Mercedes Benz
and your motor's clean
but you need a little more
If you wanna be with me
You see sometimes, life is so hard for me..
Yeah sometimes, life is so hard for me..
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah..)

Melancholia
and
Honeybee
You Don’t Have To Add These To Your Station, Richard! Really! I just thought about what you’d asked while I was listening to “our stuff” and “realized” HOW MUCH I liked these two songs. Melancholia makes me actually cry. I think of it playing at my funeral and imagining how many there would feel any remorse or sympathy toward our relationship. And then(worse than THAT) I'll imagine it as being “me” singing THAT unto “myself”(being a “changing” man and all). And THAT is “why” this one did not come to mind as being a “favorite” song of mine when you’d asked. Although, I think that “mechanically”(professionally?) it IS “one of our BEST”, as far as THAT kind of stuff can go. And then there’s Honeybee, basically a "different take" upon the "same topic"(losing and dying). THAT one “probably should have been chosen” as my “favorite one” of all, as far as improvisational perfection goes. But IT would have NEVER happened "without the FAT LADY!” for SHE IS THE ONE who “Gave Birth” unto many other songs. Nice topic Richard! Thanks! -M-
