Does IMP have an official stance regarding AI-assisted songs?
I hardly dare ask the question, knowing the vehement objections I’ve seen in some places.
I understand the resistance, believe me I do. (-:

But what about non-instrument-playing lyricists like myself? I’ve always relied on collaborators to give musical life and a voice to my work. I’m grateful for the many wonderful collaborations I’ve had over the past two decades (several of the results are on my Artist page here). But I’ve also ended up with drawers full of lyrics still begging for a home, to say nothing of the new lyrics I continue to write. And, for various reasons, collaborations with skilled musicians seem more difficult to come by. For instance, one frequent and favourite long-time collaborator of mine in the UK does very little music these days, as he’s busy with art (oil painting) and woodcarving projects.

After a long hiatus, it’s good to be back on IMP and to see so many familiar faces, so to speak. The song I’ve just uploaded (‘The Edge of the World’) is AI-assisted. I wrote the lyrics and the melody (I provide melodies for many of my collaborations), and, after considerable fine-tuning, Suno gave me the music and vocals I was after. (If there’s an objection to the song because it’s AI-assisted, let me know and I’ll remove it.)

I know generative-AI is a topic of fierce contention on songwriting forums as administrators struggle to find a fair and reasonable balance regarding its use. Many musicians/composers are vehemently against it, while others see AI as a tool that can be used to advantage without diminishing their own skills. No doubt about it; we’re living in scary times on a number of levels. But I for one, even with just my couple of simple skills, don’t intend to be left behind while technology forges ahead.

Sorry about the ramble. (-: But back to the question: Will it be permitted to post AI-assisted works here (e.g. human lyrics & melody/AI instrumentation & vocals)?

Hiya, Donna! Welcome back! I do not believe there is an official position, but I know that it is very controversial. As a longtime IMP musical artist, I am personally fascinated with the technology, and I even created this new artist page for my AI creations. I obviously have no problem with it, but some people do. And I respect their positions and resistance. That said, I do believe anyone who does post AI music should be open and transparent about it. My Larree AI artist page has some original songs, and also some experiments using public domain material for lyrics. I credit Suno on every AI track I post.

well Donna, this is my call and I'm somewhat on the fence about it. Right now I'm allowing it, trying to enforce it would be nearly impossible.

I reserve the right to change my mind though if shit starts getting really weird and uncomfortable. :)

I support your position 100%, Scott. Personally, I would declare all AI compositions not eligible for Golden Kayaks, or perhaps create a new non-genre-specific category for best AI song.

Thanks, Larree! (-: Also for your response regarding AI. That was a good idea, creating a separate page. Perhaps I should do the same thing.

And like you, I believe people should be open and transparent about AI if they choose to use it in whatever capacity.

I too find it fascinating. I'm a beginner - just getting to grips with its basic possibilities. I know of some musicians who can upload their live music and even their vocals to Suno, though I believe the latter is fairly complex. Maybe in time it will be simple enough for me to add my own vocals (though only for songs that don't call for a wide vocal range (-: ).

UPDATE: Just saw that you uploaded 'The Edge of the World' to your designated AI page. Thanks!
I note that when I click on the arrow to the right of the song, the song doesn't play. Only an empty box shows up. It plays only if I click on the title on the left. Is there something I can do to correct that? Perhaps I missed a step when I uploaded the song?

Thank you, Scott. I hope 'shit' never gets 'really weird and uncomfortable'. ;)

But if it does, I'll of course respect whatever decision you make.

Donna , dig your new song, getting help to produce and assist an artist is critical these days, especially if one has not the ability to get together, of course sending stems to our helpers has been done for ages, that is what i do a lot to assist in getting my songs to the next level.

. I think things are changing in this industry and AI is here to stay in many differrent ways, not just music

I still write tunes which I produce my self without help from AI and have a whole slew up at earshot distro which have been downloaded to radio stations in Canada and other places in this world, and they have done well.

as for this AI, this is for fun and it aint going any further then IMP.

Larree has struck something that is golden, and I thought I give it a go. but no further then here at indiemusicpeople, , I am doing this for enjoyment and fun. Yet if Scott says take them down and thats it, i would concur and do so, no questions no hard feelings

I love AI. As a writer, it is perfect, a band that does not sleep, a Producer who is coherent, the ability to choose voices, instruments, styles, and harmonies. This site will blossom as more of us delve into the unbelievable world of AI. The number one country song last week is AI generated. I use my lyrics, my chord progressions, and select all the other parameters. I have been through so many people trying to get a sound right. I cannot sing well enough. I can marginally play. Now I have access to beyond world class musicians and can make it all radio ready. So, yeah, I am lost in AI.

Well, lets just put our instruments down, stop using our God given thought processes & musical talents, kick back & let AI do it all for us! Maybe there is a good TV show on we can watch more important. Hey, maybe it's AI produced or hey, maybe workers at an office who write articles for news papers or Etc should just sit back & let AI do it for them. I remember a long time ago someone saying, I wish I could just sit here & push buttons & get paid big money for it! I don't know how anyone who claims to be a Musician/Artist could want to create using AI & feel like a musician & proud of what they have achieved. I've never been one to take the easy way out & all the hard work I've achieved I'm proud of. There is always another level one can go to in there playing abilities & creative abilities. Take some of the great Artist that exist, it took them years to attain what they have achieved & they will tell you, they are still learning. Greatness comes with constant learning & achievement & pride in what you achieve. It makes me feel great knowing what I have achieved over the years. It's a sense of worth no one but you can feel, but once you achieve it, you will know what I mean! I can't stop what Artists themselves want to do, but hopefully I have made some sense here, in what I have just said.

hey W.E

I still play, make up songs, compose ,sit at the acoustic piano and do my gig list ,not as much though, cause i dont perform out in the gig land anymore , i do it for the joy and satisfaction I get out of it. I play a lot of standards, good jazz tunes pop and classical, so i think you are making some assumptions here that all of a sudden people are twiddling their thumbs pressing buttons here and there and poking around making up AI doodlings . not true. I know i still practice, learn new songs , today i picked up the ukulele and did a bunch of hank williams tunes, and oldies from the 50s and 60s , now i aint that great at playing the instrument but my wife likes all the oldies from the 50 60 and 70s so i give it a go and work through a bunch

piano is what i learned, classical background, all the theory harmony history etc did exams in the RCM taught piano for 40 years and had a great time teaching and learning as I went helping others along , i also play all kinds of styles, so before you start lecturing us on the facts of music and accomplishments, we all have been there done that.

Lets not fall into the trap of judging others, okay, we I still perform, play learn music with out all the AI help, this is a distraction for me and why not try something new

alright now,

lets just get along accept others in what they do.

Sadly, or Not Sadly, depending on how you look at it or what you do, Life Happens.

Everything Progresses. Ain't sayin' if that's right or wrong, good or bad, but it's gonna happen, no matter what. Space Exploration. Automobile Assembly Lines. Robots that Think running around on Mars. Who knows what right now We don't know about..

I'm just an Observer too, but I think Larree has the right idea. Learn all you can about it. Get to know it. Use it...a Little or a Lot. Up to You. Hey, maybe We get some competition goin here with SAL 9000, portrayed as a more specialized or refined AI in 2001 ASO, potentially operating alongside or as an alternative to HAL to keep His Ass in Line..

But it Ain't Goin' Away. For Better or Worse. Just MHO. We damn sure Don't Want No Skynet.

"AI Overview
William Blake would likely view AI with deep suspicion, seeing it as a tool of oppressive "Spectres" (narrow reason/logic) that stifles true imagination, but also as a potential warning sign of humanity's enslavement by cold systems, much like the Industrial Revolution's "dark Satanic mills," urging people to reclaim vision through childlike wonder and creative, visionary insight rather than digital calculation. He'd caution against AI's illusion of creativity, emphasizing that genuine inspiration comes from within, not code, and would challenge users to question who controls these systems and for what purpose, linking them to societal division. "

(note...I googled what would William Blake think about AI...)

AI Overview ...
Nietzsche would likely view AI with deep ambivalence: seeing it as a powerful expression of the Will to Power—humanity's drive to overcome limits—but also fearing it as a catalyst for the "Last Man," leading to comfort, mediocrity, and the abdication of human struggle and self-creation. He might praise AI as a tool for human self-overcoming towards an Übermensch, yet condemn it if it promotes apathy, herd mentality, or replaces genuine human striving with mere optimization and convenience.

(note...googled what wold Neitzsche think about AI?)

AI will be the force of nature and a leader will evolve out of this system and we will be under the AI influence with control over all mankind with in the next 10 years. we will be lead by an AI entity in my opinion ,that is the entire world. conquered by something we made, slaves to the system , controlled and manipulated by a beast power

AI is a tool. If you lack in an area, AI will cover that gap. Say you aren't able to record to a radio ready level, the mix is not even close. AI can make a Nashville, or LA studio quality recording in seconds. The barriers to entry in the music business have been flattened. I am all for that! Doesn't mean you will gain overnight success. It does mean you can put a product out there that is far superior to what you can do on your own. You still have to do "music" and you can always add as you wish. Maybe you just want a new take on the song you are working on. AI can do that. Then all you have to do is treat it like a cover song, your song. I am not going to sell anyone on anything AI. To me, I just knocked down several walls in a dilapidated house long needing repairs, a new coat of paint so to speak. Have fun with music regardless. When the time comes, perform it! I just hired an entire orchestra, band, choir, and music army to do exactly as I say. How cool is that?

Another great use for AI is to hear your song in multiple genres without having to spend weeks in the studio recording the different versions. You can also have different vocal styles, change from male to female vocals, change keys, and tempos, all in the space of a few hours or less. It is invaluable for music creators.

I am probably wrong but I feel like this coming to the forefront now can only be helpful for my purposes because the realness of my music may well shine brighter.
