old songs with magical melodies
I heard one last night, never appreciated what a great tune it is til then. If You're Going To San Francisco.
Another one is Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter.

I got goosebumps reading your post. Believe it or not, yesterday I was browsing in a shop, and suddenly realised 'If You're Going to San Francisco' was playing. It stopped me in my tracks, and I remembered what a gorgeous melody it had been (and still is).
Others that pull me up short when I hear them include 'MacArthur Park', 'Witchita Lineman', and Tim Buckley's 'Once I Was'.
An older song that I heard for the first time only a few months ago brought instant tears to my eyes and rivetted me to the spot. The song was being played over a shop's loudspeakers, and it was 'Perhaps Love', a duet by John Denver and Placido Domingo.

wow Donna that's rather amazing. Maybe you're my cosmic sister. :)
I have a karaoke version of Wichita Lineman I ought to release someday. Yes that's another classic.

"Somewhere Over there Rainbow"
Yeah, I know the associations are cheeseball, but that melody!!!
There is a reason that it's a classic.

Yeah, great one. One of the greatest SF songs. I think I will add that to my cover list this week for live performances. Melody used to be the driving force of songs. No more. Now it's the beat. When melody was king you had great instrumental hits mixed in with the vocal hits. Now you never see instrumentals at the top of the charts.

Both charted versions of this song are pretty:
The original (the Left Banke)
The cover (the Four Tops):
Another very pretty Left Banke melody (lots of melodic minor)

Heard "White Room," "The Wind Cries Mary" and "Let it Be" on the radio last night, like finding El Dorodo, the legendary city of gold. Like Larree says, the instrumentals flow from the melody, and they all have tasty instrumentals.
btw, all, Brandon La Spada's "Travel My Love", wonder what you would think. A new artist on IMP, the melody reminds me, but I forget what?
Or maybe such a great melody, I imagine it's from the past lol??? Plenty of instrumental also, well played, and...

Alright, learned 'If You're Going to San Francisco' AND 'San Francisco Nights' today. Found my keys, transposed them, and did a few run throughs. Got my own fresh arrangements for both tunes. Boom.

The sample tune on my Yamaha keyboard is "Just the way you are" I think they chose that because it's very tuneful - then I love "Softly as I leave you" (Matt Monroe) and "What's it all about Alfie" Cilla Black
PS I'm on holiday at the moment and yesterday afternoon I walked past an gig outside a pub by the beach - the two guys were playing guitar and singing "Another brick in the wall" and as I listened it occurred to me how simple the tune/chords were but it was still very enjoyable and there was a good crowd drinking and applauding - the whole gig was cover songs however but it seems like that's what people want :)

finding El Dorodo, the legendary city of gold.
Yes, that's exactly what it's like hearing a great song on the radio. Me my wife and college aged daughter have recently been taking late night drives blasting the radio (Sirius) flipping the stations for songs. There's something better about finding a prize one than just playing something you put on your iPod.
Which reminds me, I wish that more people listened to impeccableradio.com. It took a lot of effort to program that, and most of you have songs on it along with a lot of other great indie stuff.
