Most people don't care about music anymore
Too much other stuff going on, i guess.

That's because the world is oversaturated with shitty music.

Your original assertion is not true, Scott.
They just don't care about OUR music.
HOWEVER, there are groups of people who do. Who do go out of their way to make new discoveries of unheard things that they might love.
And sometimes they love it, and sometimes they don't.
I know, because I am one of those people. And I have friends who are these people, too.

I will say that people do have a lot of appreciation in the jam band scene.
Best gigs in the world these days are for Grateful Dead cover bands. Kind of funny. At the end of the day, The Grateful Dead is turning out to be the most influential band to come out of our era. More influential than The Beatles, Stones, and Elvis combined!
Glad I boarded that bus back in 1971.

Todd, you really don't think there's less energy devoted to music in our culture than before the internet, cable tv, and video games?

Todd is right. And not only that, music has become something people do by themselves. Most people listen to music through earbuds instead of speakers. It isn't a communal thing anymore, except in the jam band world.

well for me that's part of the reason it's not as important now. Used to be a community thing. In college most dates I was on was sitting around listening to records, not done much anymore.

Actually, for me and my friends, we are MORE into discovering new music. The internet has made it easier!
There is a whole group of bands out of Brazil—a collective of folks who all play in each others' bands—who release all their stuff for free on their own websites. It's a deep, deep rabbit hole that I am still going down.
Stuff like that was not possible before the internet. And stuff like and places like this are keeping people like me and my like-minded friends more into discovering new, underground music than ever before.

And, Larree, the communal thing:
It's just a different community. An online community, as opposed to folks sitting in the same physical room together, checking out the new releases.
Although, going to live shows...
But yeah, it has changed.

This statement is probably not true, certain genres of music are bigger than ever, still plenty of call for Pop and Soul ballads, Rap/Dance/Electronic, World (especially African and Latin) and New Country. There isn't an interest in 'Rock bands' there was maybe but the old fans are still active.
People collect songs in digital form now and share on social media. Whether they "care" about music or not, I don't know, but they obviously listen to it. There are more music shows on TV than there ever was too.

Yeah, FT I remember when a new record would come out and one of us would buy it and we would have an after school listening party. Miss that vibe.

I've pretty much lost interest in anything mainstream. Sometimes I'll mix some Chopin with a storm soundtrack, that can get pretty interesting. But mostly I like Medieval Religious music these day, now those folks knew their harmonies.

Medieval and early Renaissance are my absolute favorite music for harmonies - so sophisticated - some of the stuff written for multiple choirs are like jazz from outer space sounding. Ages ago I got to be in groups that performed that genre - heaven.

Me and all of my friends are into music and we still get together to listen to new stuff. I get emails all the time from my friends suggesting that I check out a new bands shit.
The proof is int he pudding. Worldwide recording sales are up and many artists are enjoying the surge. Of course, they may not be indies but people are listening to them.

“Listening to music is proven to reduce stress and anxiety, motivate people to work, play and exercise harder, remember better and increase cognitive awareness. Music is shown to reduce pain, raise IQ, aid in healing and lead people to become friendlier and more welcoming. These studies show the life-long and undeniable benefits of music; that it speaks to us, moves us, motivates us and draws us together.”
If you’re not listening to music, you’re missing so much potential in your life, and if you are listening to music and it’s not doing that to you, perhaps a tune up is in order.

The problem, if you can call it that, and you should if you want your music listened to, is that no one gives a flying crapparama about ANY music nowadays. Saturation. Even those who LIKE "music", if we're talking about people who have some investment in it, like, as in, people who MAKE music, which includes practically everyone on this BB, almost no one gives a flying crappola about ANY music but their own. Therefore, no one actually listens to anything but their own shitte. Unless they think it will attract a listen to their own stuff. Therefore, there are no responses to music posts, except from people who actually are themselves.
It's bullshit, much like everything else in this country.
If sucking our own dicks could make money, we'd all be rich as Crease-us.

It is true that in our day music was more openly appreciated. We went to the record store and while we browsed the DJ played our favorite tunes and all the latest new shit. Going to the record store was an experience we all enjoyed. But alas, they all closed down once the digital era began. Thus the appreciation for music became a more isolated thing. I noticed my nephew and his friends sitting around in what appeared to be a silent room but with their heads bobbing up and down and eyes closed. Concerned and confused I drew closer and realized that they all had those little ear buds in their ears. Turned out they were all listening to Bruno Mars but each one was listening to a different song. That was their version of sitting around listening to music together. I laughed and walked away knowing that they were missing out on the correlative joy of listening to the same music as a group of people. But then again, does it really matter how and what they listen to as long as they are discovering music and enjoying it the way we used to? Another day I came through and they were up dancing. Took one bud out of my nephews ear and listened. Low and behold, it was my shit! They were listening to my shit on my website. Things are not always as they seem you know? The music industry is making money hand over fist. Unfortunately, the vast majority of us will never be discovered or get rich. But I felt mighty good when I saw those young boys dancing to my shit. I thought. Damn, all I need to do is get this shit out there and it will catch fire. However, my shit is out there. But is it being heard or seen by the masses? Is any of our music being heard by the masses? Uh, I dare say no. If it was we probably would not be indies. But what does that tell us? Without the big bucks promo machines behind them, even the front-line artists would suffer from being unknown. So, I think it is fair to say that music is still important to a lot of people. I mean, imagine church without any music or a wedding without music. Music sets the mood. A party without good dance music is no party at all, It is just a get together where people stand around and talk while nibbling on little snacks. Boring! I hate those stand and snack parties. They Suck!
Put some hard driving dance music on and everything gets better. People get more festive and the party becomes a different animal. We even use music in my martial arts classes. It helps us to develop flow. Hard driving music makes me kick harder and punch cleaner. All I am saying is that music is everywhere we go. Most times we ignore it because it is not very good. But there are times when I am shopping and the music puts me in a good mood. When I go with my wife she always goes to the stores that she knows have a man chair and good music. I sit there bopping to the beat until she gets done and it is not as exasperating as it use to be for me. I'm just saying that quite often music is being played and we just don't notice how it sets the mood for things we are doing. I never, absolutely never! Drive my car without some really good music playing. This is probably true for everyone I know. Music is an essential part of our lives and I believe we all care about it. In varying degrees but yeah, we care!

Well here in Bristol UK music certainly is still appreciated by loads of people - whether small local bands, new bands, massive well known bands, classical music or any music - the problem here is the opposite - there's so much music going on everywhere that it's hard to choose what to go to!!

Do you have any of your own songs that can be described as belonging to that genre?

No! I've got one song which is a bit drum 'n bass but my music is kind of all over the place when it comes to genre! I write my lyrics from drum beats, kind of like rap but the when I get the melody it comes out more folky/singersongwrity when it comes to singing it so........
