I'd like to talk about mixing music. I really enjoy it but I find it frustrating when my perception of the mix changes from day to day. On one day certain elements sound perfectly balanced and then the next day they don't. One day I think I'm finished with that song and the next day I realize there is more to do, It's like a constantly changing mosaic that seems to alter itself overnight while I'm sleeping! In the end I know when to stop but I have to force myself to do so. I always think there's one more fiddle lick or a couple of additional guitar fills that will make it perfect but then I realize it will never be truly perfect but nothing ever is in this life so I just get used to the imperfections and they grow on me. One mentor of mine said "do the best work you can but don't obsess about too many small details because listeners probably don't know the difference between the choices you're making. They're listening to the song, the beat, the melody, not the amount of reverb on the guitars or the variation of the drum fills".

I do have other things to do also. I like reading about your approach to music Richard. Most of your songs are at the perfection stage as far as I'm concerned.

You know Richard, I've been wondering for a while now whether you have other musicians play the different instruments or if you play all those instruments yourself.

Thank you so much for the kind words, Norm and for your continued support. How I write and record is a long story which I promise to expand on in subsequent posts but to make a long story short for now, I play all the instruments on my songs except for a few older songs which had some friends playing on them but that hasn't happened for quite a number of years. I loved the whole band experience but I found that I'm more creative when I don't have to negotiate with four other people! Another reason I stopped doing the band thing is because my ears couldn't take it any more. When I work alone I have more control over the sound of everything and can keep levels at "ear-friendly" volumes.

I hear you Richard! My mixes change daily also. Always fiddling. Thinking I can do better. At the end of the day it’s all about the song. Denny and I are what’s left of the Kings, after Don past on. We work well together and that’s rare. We never argue over stuff and it’s a true partnership. I’m lucky.
Don and I had a similar relationship, but there were times we we fought over things. But like Brothers. And in the end we agreed. We all made each other better. And I can’t imagine not doing what Dennis and I are . Songs, creating something from nothing. Sound and frequency. I love it.

Peace

Bruce

I still cherish my days playing in bands. We played on the same bill with famous bands and enjoyed the thrill of performing for very large crowds and in well known clubs as well. Those are memories I will never forget. The camaraderie of being in a band is second to none. I honed my craft and enjoyed the friendship of my bandmates too. Was it all a bed of roses? NO! There were plenty of thorns. But it was all worth it
because the good times far outweighed the bad. My life now is very satisfying. They say you can't go home again. But once you've truly been home, it never leaves you.
It lives in your heart forever.

Richard,
I agree and do the same thing as you. I've always played almost all of my own stuff or learned to program it anyways. The past few years I've been collaborating a lot more because 1) I can't play keys well enough (Bryon helps there) 2) I love sax and (Paul Wainwright) is a total professional. Someday I hope to shake their hands face to face and maybe even jam a few tunes with them. The last few years I've also changed my genre to Jazz/Fusion and Easy Listening. I love that style of music and the difficulty is a great challenge for me. To compete with the greats I have to get my mixes done professionally. I save my nickels and dimes, but I know it's right and I always have the final approval.
I also miss the live gigs, but not the drama of a band. Now that I'm retired, I've been working on a 2 hr playlist for just me and a acoustic. I can make a few bucks to support my music and have a few cold ones while playing.

Duane
