What do you do to pay the Bills?
I know we would all Love to make a living doing what we Love....... For me and I am sure most of you. it would be a career emersed in music , both recording and touring.

However, That is just not reality for most ..

We have all heard the phrase "Don't quit your Day Job" when referring to Actors and Musicians

I am interested in knowing what you all do to pay the rent and provide for family. What is your "Day Job" ?

I am the Controller for a San Diego Tech Firm.... What do you do????

Sam I already know what you do :)

Go on Sam------- rub it in!!!

Jeff---this is TAX time here in NZ

that means we find out whether we are in the red or the black (for the last year)

we try to be as self suffiicient as possible---big garden , kill our own meat (Black Sheep) trade with friends, cycle rather than drive etc

--we still find electricity, telecom (Phone and Broadband) and Rates (property tax)rise about 10% each year so we can never get ahead---also Gas has gone up and down up to 50% a year---and now the Kiwi dollar has dropped to about US50cents

8 years of the Bush admin ----leaves the whole world f**cked,

so they use our money to bail out the banks

---thanks guys!!!

I do conservation work.
More specifically I repair antique art and artifacts and consult with private collectors and museums. The type of restoration I do is kinda tricky and esoteric...and I'm really good at it.

And I'm a music teacher, which barely pays but is a lot of fun.

still, I barely make ends meet.
But I get to live in a rotating museum!

I write a paper here and there about Material Culture. Mostly relating to Plains Indian Artifacts circa 1800 -1870. That doesn't pay really, but it's interesting at least.

The material culture happened during that period?

I would have anticipated a MUCH more recent time period ... in our age of all flash, no substance.

Thanks Hugh ! ... now I know I am at home.... :)

Hey Frater .... That's cool stuff ... one of my wives was a Great Grand daughter of Chief William Hicks ... He was Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1827–1828 ... and led a group on the terrible "trail of tears" from their homeland in the Georgia area into Oklahoma ... I learned a lot about the Indian way of life from her ... especially the part about NEVER give a Cherokee a bottle of booze ... I was always waking up and checking to see if I still had my scalp .. :)

:-)

"Material Culture" means their stuff. Clothing, tools, art and artifact.
The things they made...as opposed to "culture" as in traditions, practices and social norms etc.

I've been doing fire protection, mainly for the semiconductor industry, for about 13 years.

I used to set things on fire, just to see if they could be put out, when I was in product development. Now it's more system designs on CAD and giving the odd fire protection seminar in Taiwan or Japan.

I also do a bit of translation (Japanese to English). There's a book on Kobe that I translated the photo captions for that was published a year or so ago. That was pretty hard because I never saw the photographs when I did the translation.

I Also teach English as a foriegn language at the weekend now and then.

Some of that stuff is quite good material for songs.

Todd, I've been a fan of your work for years.

I'm a machinist. I'm employed as a physicist's assistant (say that three times fast) for a tiny company. We do work for NASA, universities and companies around the world.

So if any of you have need of a multi-zone transparent furnace, let me know and I'll get you the employee discount.

Glenn

Truthfully, working full time in the music business doesn't appeal to me. Not since I was 18 anyway.

Well, I have been so blessed that I actually do get to do what I love. I am so thankful that I have had a very supported Mom who has supported me in music. She has always been there and allowed me to be myself. So my day job is music only because God has blessed me with family and friends who believe in me and have allowed me the freedom to focus on my life long dream of a career in music.

There are so many great artist in this world who never had the opportunities I have to persue their dreams. So given this opportunity I will work hard to make all proud of who I am as a person and artist.

Fortunately, everything we do is about music, all from home. My husband and I run St. Louis' main analog mastering suite (Blue Jade Audio Mastering), he has golden ears, I do the books, websites, admin stuff. Our 2nd business is Sarno Music Solutions, inventing and hand-building vacuum tube preamps and guitar pedals... he's the mad scientist, I stuff boards, build websites, organize, books, admin. yep.

super grateful. broke, but grateful!
