Would you be so kind as to tell me what I must do to obtain a license for a cover? (Lace and Hugo - feel free to chime in since I know you do covers too)
Does it involve registering on "Songfile" at the Harry Fox agency? If it does and you find the name of the song you want to do, what then? Do you pay a one time fee? The info below has me baffled. I have a few Dylan covers that I'm dying to post but I know I need the license. How the hell do I start?
#2 seems especially daunting. Please enlighten me. It can't be as complex as it looks. Or is it? Can I post the songs while the license is pending? (wishful thinking)
Can I assume that IAC is "1E"? I'm not selling any songs and I'm not selling any CD's with covers on them. All I want to do is put a some free non-downloadable covers on my artist page for the sole purpose of sharing them with listeners.

Criteria To Obtain Limited Download & Interactive Streaming Licenses
If your music service is not one of these five types, or you cannot provide all six pieces of information for your quarterly royalty reports to HFA in a way that can be verified in a royalty compliance examination, you cannot obtain statutory rate licenses from HFA for these uses. ??
1. Online music service offering must be one of these five types:
A)Standalone Non-Portable Streaming Only ?User can listen to sound recordings only in the form of interactive streams and only from a non-portable device to which such streams were originally transmitted while device has a live network connection.??
B) Standalone Non-Portable Mixed Use?A service where user can listen to sound recordings either in the form of interactive streams or limited downloads, but only from a non-portable device to which the streams or downloads are originally transmitted.??
C) Standalone Portable Mixed Use?A service where the user can listen to sound recordings as interactive streams or limited downloads from a portable device.??
D) Bundled Services?A subscription service offering one or more products or services bundled together without separate pricing for the service apart from the other bundled products or services.??
E) Free and Ad-Supported Services?A service offering free of charge interactive streams and/or limited downloads to the end user.

2. You must be able to provide the following monthly data regarding your website/online music service to HFA on a quarterly basis:
a) Service revenue.
b) Subscriber numbers.
c) Content costs.
d) Applicable performance royalty costs.
e) Total number of plays of all musical works.
f) Number of defined promotional uses.

?The statutory mechanical royalty rate for physical recordings (such as CDs) and permanent digital downloads is: ??

The rates for interactive streams and limited downloads are determined by a number of factors. These include service offering type, licensee type, service revenue, recorded content expense, and applicable performance royalty expense.

Very nice rendition Jeff. I listened to a few of your tunes earlier on your page and I can really hear the Beatle influence in your writing. I'll go back and visit later to grab a tune for a station.
I need to do a video like that myself.

It's really very simple. You pay a one time fee based on the amount of Projected Sales. I didn't plan on selling anything so I spent about $25 bucks per song for one year. When you go on the Harry Fox site, it will break everything down for you. The fee is basically to Cover everyone's ass. They have a very large list of tunes and if the tune you want to cover isn't on the list, you can bet the original owner of the copyright doesn't want you to cover it. I'm not sure but I think they have the right to refuse your rendition also based on the owners choice.
You should have no problems though. I'd like to hear a couple of your covers.
