I Often Wonder if My Out-Takes Are My Hits
THis song I left off my CD before the last CD, but it probably has more hit potential than any of the songs I've included on that CD. This one made it all the way to the mastering stage.
This is a trait that really makes some of my family mad. THey think I toss out stuff I should keep.
But the song is called "My Girl SIngs," and I happened to hear it today. Watchoo tink?

I take it back. I can't get the song to load up to my site.
Maybe it will work later. I tried five times, and the mp3 is just ordinary mp3.
Yikes

When you tried to load it did you get a message that it the "file size was too big to load?" Sometimes that happens even when the size is not too big. Doing it at a later time sometimes does the trick. Are you sure it's an mp3 and not an aif file? IAC recommends converting files to 256 kbps rather that the max of 320 because it will play on more players but that's a different issue. Let us know when you get the song loaded. It has a hooky title. And yes, out takes can often be winners.

Good luck Bob getting the track uploaded!
Richard - Didn't know about 256 kbps being better for more players
- I do mine to 320kbps (Thanks for the tip!)
We also live for the happy accidents in music!

That's exactly what it says, Richard, and I know it's just an ordinary 3 minute mp3, at 160. I'll try again when I get home from work. Thanks.

Great song Bob. I love the guitar work and especially the vocal. It has a cool alternative sound that is very organic and hard to do. The song has an early Beatle feel but with a modern attitude. The arrangement has some nice variations and quite a few good hooks.

Cool song. Why'd you cut it?

Thanks for checking it out, Guys. I am not clear on why I cut it. Probably something to do with the idea in my other post, you know. Maybe it wasn't strange. Not really a strange element in it except the way Sean and I tried to push the limit of just how many harmonies and counter melodies we could get going. Sean is at least half the voices on it. He also let me use the balalaika for that one sound. Think I played it. Maybe he did? I know Matt is on drums.
I have others that people say are the real winners that I cut. I'll try putting them up here and see, but maybe allow some time between the put ups so I don't sink my own ship.
It is kinda sunny, though. That's what I thought when it came up on my ipod the other day. Sunshine. Catchy.
My siblings think I've been burying the hits for years and years. They get a little frustrated with me.
I think it's the kind of thing that wears out for me sooner than some of the stuff that I do put on the cd's.
I don't know. It's also real possible that I don't know what the hell I'm doing.

Bob- sometimes it's very difficult for an artist to be objective about his or her own work. That's why other people we're invented! Here's a silly but true example:
Herman's Hermits had a song they only played in rehearsals as a warm up because it was funny and it cracked them up but they never took it seriously or performed it in public. One day their rmanager walked in and heard it for the first time and said: "That's a single!" The song was "Mrs Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter". The song went on to be their biggest hit and earned them millions of dollars.
I've learned so much about my songs just from being here at IAC. Songs of mine that were my favs are not always favs with others. Songs of mine that are not my favs are favs with others. It's a mystery to me but that's what art is. It's isn't meant to be understood, just appreciated. And as long as folks are diggin' it, why question why?

This IS single material. Great tune with a killer hook.
But I can hear why you cut it; it doesn't sound much like the rest of the album (which I also love, as you know).
But you know, that's the beauty of IAC, iTunes and the entire digital format... it's bringing back the concept of a single as a viable economic unit that can be successfully marketed apart from the rest of the record.
Push this one, Bob. Put it up not only here, but around the web. Send it in to radio stations and see what kind of response you get. And then, when it starts attracting attention, make sure that you put it on the record that you put out next. (Just like they did in the 60's!)

Sounds like you may have enough "buried" tunes to do an ARCHAEOLOGY album (lol)...go for it!

yup. It's a keeper! Nice work Mr. Elliot... Glad to see you puttin' the nuvo in your retro! Don't try and make this a B-side again, my good man. It's a sweet tune.
And WELCOME to PHLEGM PHAVORITES IAC radio, man.

Hey, thanks for the add to the stations, and for the comments.
I heard it while walking to work today, and I decided I must have been trying to do my very best Paul McCartney on the bass. The bass is trying to not hit the root too much. Trying to do melody with the song melody, yet still hold it down.
You're right, Todd. It just didn't go on the album. The album was "Late Afternoon Sun." Didn't go on the next one either, and I don't see it fitting in the one I'm doing now, but your idea that this site here is the place for stuff like that....well, that sort of solves the dilemma of the orphan songs for me. I mean bands used to have singles that were on no album, and they weren't even throw away tracks.
So that could be what happens. I have a few of these, and mostly they are of the more instantly catchy type like this one.
