Tom and I provided most of the background music but Ashley really shines here. I was particurlarly happy with the background vocal arrangements. I've always felt that the true test of an artist is to strip all the production away and see how they sound. I've heard Ashley playing solo she's fantastic and audiences agree. (awr) Was a bit slow to recognize how good a lyricist she is and I love how she challenges the audience here. She has as much raw ability as anybody I've ever been around. (thh)

This is one of the few songs I've ever heard that I loved right away and I couldn't stop listening to. From the simple but elegant melody to the emotional and clever lyrics, this song has it all. Ashley pulls off the vocals without trying to show off while providing the passion and pain of the song. (awr) Agreed. My memory of recording this is that she turned the producer from a skeptic to a believer in about one stanza. (thh).

I'm happy that 'Untold Story' is moving back up the charts. (awr) It's the title track of the Bridge CD. Oliver Moore came up with the title, which was appropriate for all of us at the time. He later crafted the CD cover a bag without an owner, the arch-covered door at the end of a leaf-covered bridge that for all the world looks like the haunted Flinderation Tunnel (thh).

If Bobbie Jo Gentry wanted to rock a little more, this is kind of what it would sound like. A good, solid, well-produced number, carried by Ms. Thomas' vocal and lots of healthy guitar licks. From the sound of the production is seems like she has professional backing and the talent to make it. (awr)

The purists won't like it because it's too produced and perhaps a little artificial in instrumentation; the A&R guys won't like it because the song lacks the big beat, is too cliched and could use an editor to pare it down some. But Ms. Perala doesn't hesitate to throw everything into this oft-accurate commentary on American life, and doesn't seem to care what anybody thinks. The song with its sparse guitar sound is undoubtedly beefed up when done live and becomes something else entirely. To me, that alone means Score!(thh)

A song collaborated by Allen and Oliver, worked out in a matter of a few hours when playing sitting directly next to one another. The rest of the band found its way pretty quickly and with the exception of the break and a few lines it was done in a night or two. Oliver declared it the CD's title song during a rehearsal break. Given that nobody had a clue what was going to happen to this bandor us individually for that matterit worked. (thh)

I realize this song has been up for a long while, but upon further review, I find this alt-country tune to be irresistable. Don't be surprised if this isn't draped over the soundtrack to a David Lynch movie. The song comes to us at a quick mid-tempo, the instrumentation languishing long whole notes over the drums. Ms. Sykes serves the music well, not trying too hard, and sounding as luxurious as the music. Terrific (thh)

The simplest songs are often the best. Ms. Wright gives us a steady pounding of fortissimo quarter-time chords on her piano to remind us of that here. My only gripe is that the recording could sound clearer, but this is a first-rate number (thh).

I know this song: it's the one that will never make it to No. 1 because it's too good; Cassell's voice floats smoothly over the jazz acoustics, but I'm especially enamored with the use of low strings, the upright bass and the extended chorus. I'm not a big fan of voice doubling versus harmonies but it really works well with this song. (awr).

Stripped down to E's measured voice, the tune's double-tracked upper- and lower-range harmonicas provide all the imagery you need to understand what was really behind Allison's lyric. I didn't choose this song because of the name of the artist. I doubt we are related. Such a nice mix of melodies coming together from the vocals, violin, and guitar. Almost a trance like feeling from Emily. (awr) SURE you're not related. This vocal drips with sadness, reminds me of those Appalachian people we knew growing up who sung while doing something you know is killing them. Band's performance is excellent because it is sooo much more difficult to play that slowly and keep it straight than to go at 120 beats per minute. It is an underappreciated part of musicianship (thh)

From the backwards opening to the steel guitar this song has many subtle sounds. I love the way the tension is built and released on the chorus. This well-thought out exercise in music layering works largely because of Passmore's subtly laid-back and soulful delivery with the slides providing the real musical portion. I can't get this song out of my head. I love the line "Had all the hey dude that I could stand". The great background vocals from Trisha Yearwood make for an addicting chorus. I bought Kevin's 2:30 am CD and after several listens I now have more of his songs stuck in my head. I think what sets Kevin apart from some country artists is most of his work is self written/co-written. I someone asked me to describe his music I would say "Take Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Crowded House and add some Country influences." 2:30 am is a first rate CD and I highly recommend it. (awr) This is the better side of big-time country music, the songs with the up-tempo, dotted-sixteenth rhythm are the best ones, the torch carrier dating back to the hillbilly music from whence it came. Love the vocals and the acoustic work. (awr)..Love this song because the snare-dominated percussion style, slide and vocals bear at least as much in common with early 20th-century Delta music as they do to anything contemporary. Missouri-native Jodee Lewis sounds marvelous and is right at home here. (thh)

Produced in a hurry on my home studio. (awr) Oh, you're just being modest again...I always liked the song and thought it was a step up all the way around. On the whole, the song represents progress for the composer in the context of the other stuff being done at the time. (thh)

Green Roses
My favorite post-Bridge song of Allen's and quite possibly my personal favorite of his, period. Band performances are first-rate, not to mention it being my own best work. The attention to detail in not completely repeating the music as the phrasing plays through makes the tune seem even more fluid and musical than maybe it otherwise might. (thh)

As He Falls
My favorite song from the Bridge CD that isn't Allen's and is located between tracks 1 and 3. Actually, I just like it, in large part because of the drastic dynamics changes and mood, as well as the insistent guitar runs. A departure from most of the stuff we do. (thh)
