Now see, this here, this thread at Indie Music People dot com,

is the first I've even caught wind of this....

Let me see if I get this straight...

Because I don't know if I'm getting the gist.
Larree or somebody tell me if I'm getting the gist here....

Some Black Folks have decided there's not enough Black Folks
at the Oscars, so they've decided to Boycott, the Oscars?
Is that right? Is that what's going on here?

So, your 'solution' to there in your opinion not being enough
Black Folks there, is to make sure there now are going to be even less?

Well that makes sense, doesn't it.

Well no, that's facetious; it makes no sense at all.

And did I catch that right Will Smith and his whole family ain't showin' up?
That's too bad, he's real good, he may win something,
then he'll feel stupid as hell he didn't show up.

Will Smith and I share a birthday,
but I'm older, so I get to say he's got my birthday.

I know I'm older than he is.
September 25, 1959.

If I hadda guess, I'd say he's 1961.

Good idea, Self. Let me go ask Mr Google.

Holy Bananas!!

Yeah, he's got my birthday, alright.

1968!

Jesus, I feel old now.

I'm a whole nine years older than that man? Jesus.

I feel old.

Fuck it, I Still Rock like I'm Young. There's that.

Chris Rock, don't be a douche,

Host the friggin' thing.

Hasn't it occurred to anyone,
if your complaint is there's not enough of your people there,
that's a reason to make sure you show up?

Why's it only me who ever thinks of this stuff?

I don't get it. Oh you're making a statement.

With a big underscore made of nothing but White Folks. Uh-huh.

Good Plan.

This shit reminds me of Kanye West,
trying to grab any microphone he can,
no matter who they're talkin' about,
he did that to Taylor Swift...

"Hey Hey it's all about Me!" he said, basically.
Taylor was going, "but, didn't I just win an award here?"

The way you get at the Oscars, is Make Better Movies, Folks.

Spike Lee, man you should know that shit.

I won't even try to explain. Absolutely none of you could possibly understand. So go ahead and label all the Black people stupid for saying "Fuck The Academy". Basically, that is what they are saying to us by not including ANY Black people as nominees. The only Black movie that was nominated was for the script of Straight Out Of Compton. That script was written by two White men. But for the second year in a row, not one Black person was nominated for ANYTHING. Not going to debate this though. I already know where you all stand. No need trying to change your mind. So I won't post again. That should be a relief huh? Yeah, you're right were all so stupid for wanting to be included in a organization that we spend millions of dollars on every year. Not one Black person, Latino or Asian? So this has nothing to do with there not being enough Black people represented in the nomination process. This is about not any people of color being represented or nominated. They completely snubbed everyone that was not White. So why shouldn't we boycott the event? If that is stupid to all of you. I guess I am guilty. Fuck the Oscars. It is obviously for White people only. I hope Chris Rock stays as the host so he can rip the place for the blatant discrimination that has been constantly displayed by them. But I won't watch and nobody in my family will watch. 86% of the nominating committee is White. Guess that explains that............. Well, it explains it for me.

it's complicated

first, we need to understand that the nominations are based upon compelling and interesting storylines. Solid acting, and incredible production, writing, directing and the many aspects of what goes into making a movie, I know a few people in the business, mostly involved in the sound and music. So, lets face it, the competition is tough. It is not about race, because its 2016 folks not 1916 or 1966, i think we have evolved and progressed enough to know that. lets get over the crying, whining and acknowledge those who have been nominated. I mean, does it have to be like this, as follows. we will have proportional segments for every race. so many percent for blacks, Hindus, whites chinese etc. I mean, it is based upon bloody merit folks and that is it/

Bryon, how complicated is it really?

Is it more complicated than 'make better movies'?

Maybe I'm missing something.

Sounds like Larree nailed it with 'this is retarded'.
I'll also add 'they're being a big whiney bunch of babies'.

Donald Trump made a point,
when's the last time you saw a White Person win a BET Award?
It doesn't happen.

And this, Is, Equal Opportunity...

You either make Better Movies, or you don't.

You don't get a prize for crying about
'no fair, make it easier'... it's the same contest for anyone.

Really.

WAHHHHHHHHHHH.

Get some dignity Folks.

Boycotting the Oscars,
because there's not enough of your people there for your liking,
only makes sure there is less of you there,
AND makes you look like a bunch of wailin' babies to boot.

Deal With It.

Lesley, its complicated for people to accept the reality of the situation sometimes, their feathers get ruffled, they get offended, , and i did indeed address the aspect about making better movies, raising the bar, writing excellent scripts, or did you not get that?

Sometimes people dont always read, everything in a post, the paper, or really listen either, it is a disease of jumping to conclusions in this society, A lot of people just dont take the time to take in something, and read through a few times to make sure they get what it is all about in a particular subject,

Exactly Bryon,

And, what the academy is saying to people of color is that there was absolutely no excellence from us. I disagree with that assessment. I grew up a stones throw away from Hollywierd. I know the culture quite well and I know that it has always been about race. My brother is a film director who graduated as valedictorian of his class in a prominent Hollywierd film college. After 20 years of struggling to get Hollywierd to accept him he left. I am not a big fan of Spike Lee. Just don't like his constant negativity. Sometimes he has a good point though. This is one of those times. I say we should boycott the show and start our own awards show that recognizes the work of our people. The same way we did with the Grammies. We have the BET Awards and the Soultrain Awards. That is the only way that we are going to get any recognition in an industry that is run by White people. The bottom line is that awards are all about popularity and collective opinions. If the people that are voting are mostly all White. Why wouldn't they vote for their people? It is just natural human nature to do that. It is not racist that they prefer White movies and actors. It is racist that all of the voter are White. If you change the racial make up of the voters, you will definitely see a different result. If it was all Black people voting there would be mostly all Black films chosen. It is called personal preference and we all have our own. I prefer Will and that is probably because I am Black. I identify with him better. You may think it is not about race but you have not seen what I have seen my brother go through just to get a film with a positive theme about Black people done. If it is not about drug dealers, pimps, athletes or gangster rappers. Also, if I see another slave film that depicts Black with negative stereotypes I will puke. I saw Tarantinos film the other day and walked out after the 50th "N" word was said. He is obsessed with that word. That film was nominated. Unless you play the negative stereotype game about Black people, Your film will not get over the Hollywierd race wall. Many Black actors are frightened right now because the few roles that are for Black people will probably be terminated due to the boycott. I say whatever! Nothing from nothing leaves nothing. Did you see how upset star wars fans got about the Black actor in the new film? You actually think it was not about race?

I believe Michael B. Jordan gave an Oscar-worthy performance
in the film "Creed", whose director, Ryan Coogler, also should had been nominated for both Best Director and Best Screenplay.
All the accolades went to Sylvester Stallone who only acted in it, for a change he had nothing to do with writing the script,
and I think this is one of the reasons that started the boycott movement after Stallone won a Golden Globe Award and did not thank or even mentioned the lead actor or director, both black men, who should had been winners as well.

Its over, the nominations are in, the votes are cast, perhaps their ears will hear, and then the guilty feelings may start and they will throw a few bones around next year, but these people in the movie biz should know this, it is like the grammy's . how many times have you seen songs get nominated that are shit. although most are great. but it is subjective and people go with their personal likes and what they gravitate towards

sometimes it is a popularity thing too, how connected one is and man i personally know from my experience in life , in the 3 different businesses I have been in, it is building and maintaining relationships, that, my friends is key, and it means a lot.

If one has built relationships, has a good rapport with people, treats them all with consideration and respect, well that is the ticket to ride. cheers

Stoneman. I don't care who makes a movie or who is in a movie as long as it is a great movie. The motion picture academy is made up of people in the industry who vote for the best of the best. There are many films I like that were not ever nominated for anything. Arguably, Will Smith deserved a nomination for his role in Concussion. Perhaps he was only two or three votes off. We will never know that. I read an article today from the academy that says they are deeply offended that people believe they make their choices based on race. I want the best films nominated. Period. This whole thing is out of control. I hope you can see that.

If the academy ever starts voting based on the need to satisfy the diversity police instead of voting for the best of the best they become completely useless and irrelevant.

Right on Larree, and that is exactly what I was talking about, it is about the quality of the movie, all aspects, it is tough competition, just like the music biz, do your best, and if it doesnt cut it, do better, learn to improve ones ability, work harder smarter, be driven, do your best, and if it aint good enough, keep going, but lastly it is not about rewards or awards, it is being proud of what you did do.

do it for the art

do it for yourself and others to enjoy'

Everyone's entitled to their view, as am I.

Will Smith is incredible, and the movie "Concussion" is probably
absolute Best Picture Material.

And why it fails to be nominated?
I'm gonna tell you all right now,
I do not think that is about race.
I think that is about the NFL slipped the Academy
a Shitload of Money NOT to even Nominate that film.
Because the NFL does not want you to even see that picture.

By the way, I think Spike Lee is brilliant when he wants to be.
"Do The Right Thing" was absolute excellence.

Still, at the end of the day,
I don't think boycotting the Oscars is going to help anything.

I think that doing that is just a mistake.
That's my opinion, and if that's simple. So be it. It's still mine.

I know about dealing with racial preference,
quite a few times I performed on the stage at the Apollo Theater
on Amateur Night, and only once, did the audience even let
me get through to the end of the song,
on that one occasion that I did,
I made it tied with three other people for 4th place.
The MC said to me 'you were damn good'.

I even won fourteen bucks. Only time they didn't just boo my ass
right off the stage before I got ten words outa my mouth.

People are funnier creatures than maybe we all take into account.

Still, it wouldn't do me any help to yell back
when they booed 'Hey No Fair!'

I just kept coming back.
Till I made it through and won at least once.

Really Lesley, NFL , come on man. thats a beaut. : ) people already knew about this concussion thing years ago, the NFL would be found out and have their asses sued off , think about it, no grounds on this possibility at all, the lawsuit has essentially been settled. so your conjecture is far out , it has nothing to do with that at all .

The movie is a good movie, Smith was OK, it didnt do anything for me, maybe you saw it, and liked it. I found The Revenant a far superior movie in all aspects.

but the NFL conspiracy thing. unlikely

All I am saying is that without representation on the voting committees there will be preferences based on excellence as well as race. I am not saying that some of the movies nominated are not worthy. I am saying that when you have a racial majority voting on something, it is not crazy to expect a racially preferred voting block. It is like a Black man going to trial with an all White jury. The odds of that man receiving a fair trial are slim to none. As a prison chaplain I saw this stuff all the time. If not for the innocence project that has freed a lot of innocent Black men due to DNA technology that was not available at the trial, these men would have been executed or still in jail. There is no difference in that and Hollywierd.

CBS stole my brothers script way back in the early 80's (Catfish and Scillet) and came out with a show called (Ten Speed and Brown Shoe). After he sued them they Black listed him. Even people that had been life long friends would not talk to him because of the fear that the industry put into them. The movie industry has always been racially biased. This is a documented fact. From Steppin Fetchit days, Black Exploitation days all the way to Django. Race has always been an issue. The way Black people are portrayed has always been an issue. What on earth makes you think that has suddenly changed?

In regards to the NFL, Jay only said what a whole lot of other people are thinking. In the music/movie industry, decisions like that are made on the downlow in executive board meetings or on the golf course. Palms get greased all the time. The movie industry is no better than the music industry. Money talks and bulshit walks. I don't think that was about race. I think that was about money and concern that parents are going to stop allowing their kids to play football. That would be the one thing that destroys the game. So, I don't see that assertion as such a far fetched thing. But the Creed issue is definitely about race. Sly played the same damn role that he has been playing for several decades. He was definitely not more deserving than the true star of the movie or the director. The fact that he didn't even acknowledge them at the Globes is a damn shame and an insult that does not surprise me at all. Who wins a Globe and does not thank or acknowledge the director and co-stars? Also, how can you nominate two people who write a script about a real life happening? (NWA) That script basically wrote itself. I could have wrote it because it was about my hood. The only two White people intimately involved with the project were the only two people acknowledged by the academy. You actually think that was not about race? Come on man, have you really thought about that without being so enamored with the so called academy. That is very strong if not concrete evidence of racial bias.

I would like to see a different Academy of the Arts started up. i would run it. it would only cost like 10000 per person to join to come to the party okay yearly, and a $100000 to become a voting member a year If you want lifetime membership that is a cool million, then i would direct all of them to follow my instructions carefully and vote who i said should receive the Awards. if they didnt, I would banish them for life : )

Stoneman. Writers of all races get their scripts and songs and everything else they create stolen. That has nothing to do with race. So I have to strongly disagree. If the motion picture academy has to consider the race of the people involved in the films they nominate then the Oscars will lose all credibility. Only the BEST films should get nominated. Period.

And like I said. Maybe the film or the actor or the screenplay you liked only fell a few votes short. Maybe just one vote short. Not everyone gets nominated. I think this is so fucking stupid.

Larry, do I really care about what you think? Nah, not on my list of things to care about. Just cause others get shit stolen that makes it okay? Nah, not on list of things to believe. Was my brothers case racial? Absolutely, I could show you proof of the many things that were racially motivated that they did to him. But I don't have to show you shit man. Even if I did, you wouldn't believe it. So, why waste our time on it? I will ignore your "stupid" remark because I don't think it is worth getting myself upset about. Dpn't even try to goad me tino another online skirmish with you. I could care less about your opinion just as you think mine is stupid. So, whatever man. Believe whatever you want to believe. You don't wear the skin that I wear or see the things that I have seen. I will never watch another academy awards show until they fix the disparity in the racial make up of the voters. That's that man......Be Blessed!

I didn't say YOU were stupid. I just think this whole controversy is stupid.

And do not give me this "you are not in my skin" shit. I once had a white supremacist tell me that Jews were worse than blacks because we can pass for white. We are the same, pal. Exactly the same.

Bottom line is that directors have a right to express their artistic vision any way that they see it. Plain girls can't come in and complain because all the leading ladies are spectacular. Short fat bald guys can't complain because there are no short fat bald superheros. A director shooting a film about the life of Albert Einstein is not going to ask Samuel L. Jackson to play Albert. And that same director is not going to ask Tom Cruise to play Willie Mays.

This is the last thing I am posting on this crap. This is from Vanity Fair.

Oscars So WhiteJanuary 20, 2016 2:07 pm
Oscar Voters Really Don’t Like Being Called Racists

“Race was the furthest thing from my mind when I cast my ballot,” says voter who doesn’t even see color.

by Katey Rich

From Spike Lee’s vocal outcry to Tyrese Gibson calling for Chris Rock to step down as host, the uproar around this year’s overwhelmingly white Oscar nominees has gotten louder by the day. And, unsurprisingly, the Oscar voters themselves—who cast the votes that created this lily-white crowd—aren’t feeling great about it.

“I’m very offended by the idea that some people are calling us racists,” huffs one angry member of the Academy’s actors’ branch in The Hollywood Reporter. “Race was the furthest thing from my mind when I cast my ballot, and in fact I nominated one person of color for an award. Such a sweeping declaration is extremely irresponsible.”

Many Academy members quoted in the piece repeated the same phrases heard any time that the nominations skew overwhelmingly white—like, say, last year, or most years before. “It was just an incredibly competitive year,” says Penelope Ann Miller. “Straight Outta Compton was a great film; I think it just lost some Academy members who are older,” she continues. Jeremy Larner, a member of the writers’ branch, at least concedes that “I cannot prove the Academy or anyone else is not racist,” but finds fault with Straight Outta Compton, one of very few films featuring people of color to earn a single nomination: “I happen to think Straight Outta Compton is not a great film for reasons of structure and substance.”

In short, “don’t blame me, blame the movies and/or the other people who didn’t cast votes for non-white people.” To be fair, both Spike Lee and George Clooney agree that the Academy isn’t the only starting point for fixing Hollywood’s problem with race—as Clooney said, “There should be 20 or 30 or 40 films [featuring people of color] of the quality that people would consider for the Oscars.” But while we wait for that larger systemic change to happen, accusing a much-smaller system of racism has about the same results as it does when you accuse Donald Trump of racism: outright denial and taking of umbrage, without much consideration of the larger point. Anyone hoping that the current iteration of #OscarsSoWhite might result in real change may see these responses and despair. But, at least Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs is seeing something larger at play.

I have one more post here. And this is most likely it.

So Stoneman. This is speculation of course. But let's say that Will Smith came in at #6. And let's say he was only one or two votes off. And let's say that Straight Outta Compton was that close for some awards, too. And Creed. Would you feel the same way about the academy? The nominees we know were not the only ones who got votes. So, what if it really was that close? What could you possibly complain about if your choices just missed?

Man, you keep missing the point. I am talking about the fact that almost all of the voters are White. If they fix that problem I could care less about the outcome of the vote. At least I would know that there was representation from all communities rather than just one. But you refuse to even see that so what difference does it make? Even the president of the academy (who is Black) has acknowledged that this problem needs to be fixed in order for people to feel that the process is fair. She says she is going to work on it. That is all I am talking about.

The topic does bring some questions to mind. If you take for granted that representation is an issue..

What if you had an indie site that had like 99% caucasians, should you still represent?

Does the question also apply to females in rock genres?

Should the academy always make sure at least one comedy is nominated for best picture?

Well Sir.

I hear what you are saying. Yes, I believe so.

I completely objected, for instance,
to the farcical 'Grand Jury' finding Darren Wilson blameless
in the murder of Michael Brown Jr.
In that case, you didn't even need a complete jury agreeing,
and it wasn't twelve jurors, it was only nine,
and if I have this correctly, there were only three black people on that jury.
That got me pretty furious.

Also.

I agree with you.
There should be more black voters on the panel for the Academy.
Certainly there are black actors stoking the cash making machine,
so why shouldn't there be more black voters on the panel?
No argument coming out of me there either.
I am, for the record in no way shape or form 'enamored by the Academy',
no idea where or why you may think I am. Fuck, the Academy. Sir.

You seem to have in anger and haste gotten the entirely wrong idea
about me, and I was frankly hurt to hear you say
you 'no longer respected me'. But oh well. You don't you don't. I'll live. Or not.

Not to upset you, but just out of a freedom of speech issue,
I did put out a record, that I'd talked about,
which the talking about set off a shitstorm like just Holy Bananas...
and then some others kind of jumped on the bandwagon
in chastising me, with nobody seeming to understand
how I was saying it. But okay, got that lesson larned real good, Yes I do.
So now, I simply will not use the word, and in the case
of the song, whose title I paired down for peace and simplicity,
well in the lyrics, any time that particular word, used as I used it
for the purposes of talking about a thing difficult to talk about,
and really, I've not heard one white person say, what I said, in that song,
and nobody gets that... maybe no one ever will...

but I am putting it out.

With the word in question censored.

I know who I am, I know what I am,
I know the stands I have made.

If you know it, or if you don't, this does not change, that I know it.

And that'll have to be enough.

Peace & Blessings, To Us All.

~L, out

Academy Membership
WHO

Academy membership is limited to film artists working in the production of theatrically-released motion pictures. The Academy has 17 branches, for the crafts ranging from Actors to Writers, and two categories, Members-at-Large and Associates to accommodate individuals who work in motion picture production but do not fit into one of the branches.

The requirements for each branch and category can be found by clicking here.
HOW

The Academy’s membership process is by sponsorship, not application. Candidates must be sponsored by two Academy members from the branch to which the candidate seeks admission.

Additionally, Academy Award nominees are automatically considered for membership and do not require sponsors.

Nominees and sponsored candidates are reviewed by branch committees and recommendations for membership are considered by the Academy’s Board of Governors. The Board decides which individuals will receive invitations.

Membership review takes place once a year, in the spring. The current cycle deadline for candidates is Thursday, March 19, 2015.
WHERE

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a global organization, representing the best of an international art form, and has members in countries all over the world.
SPONSORSHIP INSTRUCTIONS

Sponsoring a candidate for membership in the Academy is a serious commitment. Please make sure you are confident the candidate has truly “demonstrated exceptional achievement in the field of theatrical motion pictures” before you agree to sponsor an individual.

It is important to be familiar with the admission criteria of your branch (or category, if you are sponsoring someone as a Member-at-Large or Associate). Click here for branch and category requirements.

Please note:

A member may sponsor only one candidate per membership cycle

Candidates for branch membership must be sponsored by members of the branch in question. Members-at-Large and Associates may be sponsored by any two members, from any branch. Members-at-Large may only sponsor Members-at-Large and Associates, and Associates may only sponsor Associates.

NEW MEMBERS PROPOSAL PROCESS

A candidate for membership must be sponsored by two members of the branch for which the individual qualifies. One sponsor should request the materials from the Academy’s Membership Department (membership@oscars.org or 310-247-3001). Please review your branch’s requirements before submitting a candidate for consideration.

After you have filled out the proposal card with the two sponsor signatures and contact information for the candidate, send the completed card, including sponsor recommendation letters (if required by the branch)back to the Membership Department. After all information has been received and verified, an email will be sent to the candidate requesting additional information on film credits and work experience.

Membership reviews take place once a year, in the spring. The current cycle deadline is Thursday, March 24, 2016.

Each candidate who receives a favorable endorsement from the appropriate Branch Executive Committee will be submitted to the Board of Governors for final approval and invitation to membership.

well, two things,
one, I actually mention you,
and your prediction that Don'll win all 50 states,
in a soon to be released song I made for Don.
Mentioning you by name in fact, won't that be fun.
Well I thought it would be, thought it only right
to say who I heard it from first, since I
mention in the song that he'll win in all 50 states,
otherwise you'd go "Hey, I SAID THAT FIRST!"
Well now you're quoted as such. No problem.
Happy to help.

Also, this is the other thing, Larree...

Scott has out, right now,
