Nine months later......
Well, it has been nine months since I first conceived the idea of playing drums so I figured I'd film another short progress clip.
Since first getting my Roland V Drums in June last year, I have been suffering from a bad case of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and my kit has somewhat expanded!! I just bought two new cymbals (a 9 inch Splash and a 12 inch China) so these are also featured in the video. They are the darker coloured ones (China is bottom left and Splash is top center).
The backing track is from my TD12 module (the heart of the drums and the part that produces all the sounds) as are the actual drum sounds. These are totally unprocessed and are exactly how they sound straight from the module. The sounds are a custom programmed kit I created specifically for my new song 'Circus Freak'.
Anyway, here's the clip......

Sure looks like a lot more fun than programming a drum machine - the cat seems to dig it too (even if it is a bit camera shy!)

Thanks heaps guys :-)
Bruce,
Yeah. It is HEAPS more fun than programming drum tracks!.... and yeah, my cat, Neo (I am a big Matrix fan), was purring his head off there. He has his little security blanket on the floor and was doing the feline 'kneading' thing with his paws. =^.^=
Jeff,
LOL @ Superkitties!!! I really do adore kittens but I don't think Neo would be too impressed with me if I introduced another feline to the house!!
Thanks too for your compliments. I do have plans on playing my kit live. Once I find a good vocalist for SuperPuss, I'll put a full band together and tour the new album. I'm planning on taking my kit with me and playing it on some of the songs.
John,
Thanks heaps for your compliments too. Keep up the great work with Fuji Minx... Meow again!! =^.^=

You really do have great 'chops', Titania. I also like the fact that you output the straight TD12 sounds. It's a good example of what a good sound module it is. There seems to be hardly any latency, that was a killer with earlier synth drums.
Tell Neo "Hi".

I love where you're goin' with your chops, SP....great feel you've got goin on. Didn't know that kit was capable of matching dynamic mindset. Saw your first at six months...really admire your determination and progress. You go!

I'm not so adept at all that engineering stuff, but your chops are an ampidextrious smorgasbord of limbs working together in a fine vibrational display of sound. I'm feeling it and you Superpuss are really a force to be reckoned with. I'm looking forward to hearing Circus Freak...

Wow! Thank you so much everyone!!! You all know how to make me purr!!!!
Steve, Neo says meow ('hi') back!
Yeah, the new TD series are just amazing with no noticeable latency at all. Roland have really done their homework on this system.
Cheers Hugh. Love ya!! *big hugs*
Thanks too VJ. :)
Another area Roland have excelled at with these kits is expression. There's simply nothing like it on the market. Yamaha have some great kits and there's plenty of other 'E-Drum' companies but nothing matches the expressiveness of V Drums (especially the TD12 and TD20). They combine sound modelling (COSM) with some incredible processing which detects position, interval and dynamics and produces what you'd expect from an acoustic kit. You can even use brushes on them and do mallet swells on the cymbals!
Jeez, maybe I should get a job as a sales rep for Roland!!!..... I used to work as an electronics tech for them in the early 90's.
Anjuli, thank you so much!
The vocal parts on Circus Freak are an integral part of this song and are going to be a HUGE undertaking. I'm hoping to create multi part harmonies with male and female lead parts.

Great video SP!!! I love watching drummers, especially when they play well. I am jealous of you because I want a electronic drum set and just hearing you talk about the Roland makes me want one even more!!! I want to get back to drumming because I miss it alot (played 5th grade through college: Orchestra, Marching, Jazz & Stage. Want to start playing drums again...). Since you were a Roland rep, what do you think about the Roland keyboards? I have a Fantom Xa that I use as a workstation. I know it's not the X6 or X8, but I have just started to learn the keyboard and I eventually want to move up to the new G series that just came out. Do you like their keyboards as well as their drums? Once again, great video!!!

Sam, thanks heaps buddy :-)
I had some friends in the town I used to live who were circus performers and they were some of the most easy going and fun people to hang out with.
Thanks heaps too Slim :-)
So you played Jazz drums too. That's cool. A good Jazz drummer is awesome to watch and listen to.
As far as Roland keyboards go, I haven't really kept up with the latest Roland digital range but I ADORE the early analog stuff. I use some of that gear in nearly all my recordings. My digital synths are both Yamaha (DX7 and SY77) and I love them too. In fact, the SY77 is a HIGHLY underrated synth. It is capable of creating some amazing sounds including really fat and lush analog sounds. The filters are just amazing especially when you consider they are digital but sound analog.
If I ever lost my SY77 for any reason, I'd be devastated. It is practically part of my musical soul!!!
The most I've had to do with Roland digital is really the D50 which is still a great synth even after all these years. I dare say if I played around on any of the new Roland digital synths, I'd probably love them too but I really have no need for one so I can't comment from experience.
Besides, I am just about to spend another grand trading my TD12 module for a TD20....... another case of GAS!!
