Hugh...plenty to be enjoyed from that latest Beacon Theater stand on You Tube, though I'm sure you've already indulged. From all I've experienced, even when they're off, they're on. Bill Graham described their sound as a "black stallion" and although the lineup has of necessity changed, the spirit remains the same. Can you tell they remain a personal inspiration???LOL! Enjoy the show. With any luck, you'll find your way backstage. In a strange way, something tells me you will.

Clapton also sat in to do a smokin' "Elizabeth Reed". Ranks very high in my all time list of live peformances. The ABB can still bring it. Two of the very best guitarists around....

It occurs to me to add that I came up with TOO SAD TO CRY in 2008 as a direct result of my Allman Bros. slide obsession. It's always a challenge to absorb the stuff you love and somehow try not to rip it off entirely when you're "giving it back" and I was pleased with the result of this one - the influence is obvious, that's for sure:

Congrats Hugh,
Allman Bros are always great with or without Eric so it should be a great show. When I saw them as few years ago for the first time, for some reason, I must have somehow under rated Dickie Betts as a guitar player. (Don't know how that could happen, maybe cause he was in a band with Duane) I knew he was good, but he just blew me away that night. It gave me a whole new perspective on his playing. You're in for a treat and I hope you get your guitar signed. I just got back from Dallas last night where I saw Paul McCartney at the new Cowboy Stadium. Somebody at one of my gigs gave my wife and I 6th row, dinner and, a limo ride to and from the show. Hope it doesn't sound like I'm bragging, it's just I still can't believe the whole thing just happened. :) Rock On and have a great time at the Allman Bros show!

Thanks, Wayne - Paul shows are always fun - hope you made yourself heard above the other 30,000 when you were singing Hey Jude...lol...
Dickie ain't with the band no more though...the new players have got all the moves though, that's for sure...it's raining here now and it's a pseudo-outdoor kind of venue that I've never been to before...I'm just hoping the show will go on and nobody will suffer from stray electrons from the gear or the sky...
Rawk on, everybody...!

Hugo - Brollies and wellies (It's always this way in the UK!)
Have a great gig - Shame Dickie Betts is not there, but I'm
sure the ABB will be cruising!

Had a great night! I'll grump first - the Susquehanna Bank Center has miserable acoustics which improve as the audience fills the place but never get great. Considering the state of the art these days that seems inexcusable. And the jumbo beers were significantly overpriced at $12/$13. Other than that it was a rockin' GREAT TIME.
Widespread Panic opened and played for at least an hour and a half. I liked the songs and was blown away by the lead guitar work. I don't know the guitarist's name and I had been completely ignorant of the band until last night, but I would have liked to join in (though my fastest licks are only half the speed of his, and I'm not exaggerating - check out my tune "At The Cavern" which represents some of my best lead developing/playing, and crank that up significantly to even begin to approach this wild man). Had to have a bit of a laugh because the guitarist reminded me of George Carlin. Both the front man and the lead guitarist joined the Allmans for a few tunes and they were oh-so-sweet.
Statesboro Blues and Whipping Post were on the Allman playlist and those are pretty much the two songs that I think of first when I think of the band. I've enjoyed the Beacon Theater live performance dvd the band made a few years back and last night's gig was characteristically full (maybe two hours PLUS encore?) and spot on from a performance standpoint. I remain absolutely enthralled by the rhythm section and in my mind the ABB is truly unique and their early innovations, even applied with some younger players who weren't there in the early days, produce a kind of musical magic that you just can't get anywhere else.
I've admired Derek Trucks (plays most of the slide work, what I would think of as Duane's former role in the band but I'm really not all that knowledgeable) but seeing him life pushed me ALMOST into the realm of idolizing him. And Chris Eaglehead has patiently urged me to explore Warren Haynes (who fronts Government Mule and takes what I would think of as the Dickie Betts guitar role in the ABB) and although I had been impressed with his work on the dvd performances something about seeing it live boosted my opinion of his work as well.
The only thing that could have made me enjoy the ABB more would be if Duane and Dickie had been there, and maybe if there'd been at least a little bit of banter from the band to the crowd (there really was none). Duane and Dickie deserve much credit for shaping the overall sound of the band, and the fact that it can still gel after all these years and with different players is a testament to the entire band's genius.
Gregg's singing was right on as was the entire friggin' band - I'm just glad I finally got out to see these guys while they're still up and at 'em. It's their 40th Anniversary Tour and they've got some more shows - I give them two huge thumbs up and encourage everybody with any inclination to do so to get out there and see them.

Glad you had a good time. Now a little St. Louis plug.... If ya get a chance Hugh, check out a group called Mamas Pride. They were signed to Atlantic by Ahmet Ertegan, the guy who signed Ray Charles, Led Zeppelin, Yes, CSNY, etc. They had a couple albums out and eventually were replaced by the Blues Bros. They were miscast as a southern rock band, but they really were into the blues. When the Allman Bros broke up, Mamas Pride ran into Greg Allman in Fla. and they toured with him... the first set their own material, and the rest all Greg and Allman Bros material. Ronny Van Zant liked them enough to want to produce a third album after Lynyrd Skynyrd finished their tour, but unfortunately that was never to happen.
Also from St. Louis, check out Devon Allman, Greg's son. Probably one of many around the country :), but the dude can play. It's Devon Allman and Honeytribe. He performs all around and he did a show with his dad recently at the Pageant in St. Louis. That's all I have in the Allman Bro department. Seeya Hugh.

ps- I did make it to NY in June but didn't get a chance to get a hold of you.

Widespread Panic's awesome lead guitarist is Jimmy Herring. He's about my age; I'd take some lessons from him if I could; another musical mountain to climb for ole Hugo:

Herring actually held down the Dickey spot in the ABB for a while. I saw them a couple of times with him. Great player.
Probably the most stage banter in any ABB shows was at this year's Beacon shows - introducing all the different players sitting in. Great that you got the chance to see 'em as they are hinting at reducing their # of dates next year.
