For Guitar Gearheads
We've chatted about the self-tuning Gibson "robot" guitars before...I was disgusted when they first came out but I've been won over a bit. Still don't own one but I have tried an SG and I thought it was an interesting bit of gear, particularly useful for folks who gig and use multiple tunings during the course of a show. If I gigged I'd be sorely tempted to buy one...

BIG PRICE DROP - They debuted at over $3k (US) and are presently available for about $1k, which seems to me like they're pretty much giving the tuning system away. They've also expanded the models and colors available...so I wanted to offer a headsup to my fellow guitar geeks...

Here's a cut-n-paste link for you:

Rawk!

Yes - noted the big price drop on the SG - did they drop the price on the LP too?
I think the reason is what you stated earlier...."I was disgusted when they 1st came out"....I think a lot of others were too and there's a big overstock on these now....

Dude, If you buy one of those I Will make fun of you.

I feel you trying to soften us to the idea, it aint gonna work.

:-)

Actually I got a line6 accoustic that has multiple tunings of course they are all digitally generated so it doesn't actully tur the pegs, but it's a great guitar!!
I got it as a novelty, but it's become my main axe. It's like having half a dozen good accoustics with you, and a sitar and a Banjitar.....

I was always down on Line6 guitars, I made fun of guys who had them, so I'm sure I'm due for some ribbing..

still, for some reason the robot guitar crosses a line i've drawn in the sands of my mind...not sure why, it's just.....wrong....

I have the original Line6 electric - it's pretty neat, even now. Noiseless recording was the big factor for me originally, but the variety of guitars is pretty kool.

I had ago on one of those line6 acoustics the other day. Kind of fun for five minutes, especialy the mode which puts a bass guitar sound on the bottom two strings. Since I play alot of finger style with walking bass li9nes that worked really well.

Couldn't get on with the fake tunings though, they clash wioth the actually sound of the guitar, sounded horrid to my ears.

You can feel it through the fingers, too, you just have to be cognitively dissonant.

The origingal colors of the "robot" guitar were something awful, like metallic silver and purple...when I first saw one in a store it was an SG in traditional cherry color...one problem with the robot SG is that the motorized tuning pegs are fairly heavy and the SG's body is so light that the SG is a bit "headstock-heavy" to begin with. It's a definite "issue" when you add the heavy tuners.

Still...if you use different tunings "on the fly" these guitars are verrrrry interesting at a thousand bucks...

As for the Line6 guitar and the digitally generated tunings...ewwwwww...not my bag at all! But hey, as Messrs Lennon and John used to sing...whatever gets you through the night...'t's'alright...'t's'alright...

Larree - I got my flying V for the equivalent of $1k, it was used... I'd love to pick up another for $499.

For a while I had 2 different Gibson RD-77 Artist guitars with the tunable bridge, but the cool thing about that guitar is the built in compression/expansion module - I opened the back once, there were three layers of printed circuit board, with "m o o g" stamped on it.

That was about the time Norlin owned Gibson Guitars, Pearl Drums, Lab Series (remember those?) Amps, and Moog synthesizers, and they made a Bunch of products that used elements of each company. There were synth drums, and the keyboard player in my Young American Showcase/Freedom Jam band had one of the first synths to be played like a guitar, with a strap- Of course the thing plugged into the Mini-Moog and was just an extension, but when the guy pulled it out and got into the front line with us two guitar players, it was kick-ass!

A lot of those innovations just vanished, especially those Grabber guitars and Ripper basses, which were a kind of blight on the face of Gibson.

I bought a Jackson guitar for 200 bucks from a pawn shop - I couldn't find it in the catalog, but I understand Fender/Ovation/Jackson and some others have merged- And now you see elements of Those guitars merging together in products.

HA HA!!

yea, if your playing quietly the alternet tuning on the line6 are a litle disconcerting. At performance volume though they are fine, the guitar is almost as solid as a les paul and isn;t very loud accousticaly.

I really only use drop D and DADGAD. and those rarely, for me it's just a super reliable instrument that sounds fantastic recorded or live. I mostly use the Parlor Guitar, The Nylon string the Banjitar and the dread. They all sound amazing. The Sitar is a hoot, it's a lot of fun, I learned that steely dan DO IT AGAIN solo and it sounds just like it!
