This could be the worst time to post this news?
After the big discussion on global warming this week, this could be the worst time to expect (sincere) congratulations on welding my first well-head in the oil field :-) Some of you remember my joy, earlier in the year, when I got my pressure ticket to do this kind of welding in Saskatchewan.
It passed the rigorous pressure test, and the consultant told me I'd have work all summer now.
This is pretty much the top of the game in this area. The money involved (for everyone) is obscene. The economic activity here in Saskatchewan is fantastic.
My wife and I got here in time to buy a house for $450 (four hundred and fifty), before the boom really took hold. I love it. We have no debt, I've never had a mortgage. I can't over-stress how valuable that has been to me as an individual to be debt-free.
Anyway, I felt like a rock star with a dozen guys huddled around the hole watching me display my skills.

Thanks Todd. You know.
Aw c'mon SRM you must have one skill :-)
You're a sterling dude Satch. By the way, avoid that Kranky King character. The Kozy King is charming and lovable, but Kranky is nothing but a troublemaker ;-)
Ha! Good one Jeff.
I've been threatening to buy some gear for some time now Larry. i want to start recording on computer. It's that the investment always translates into time i could take off work if I don't do it and freedom has always been my top priority. Soon tho'. Soon... ALSO Your nephew is correct -- Saskatchewan is Canada's growth leader right now. we're making money faster than anyone in Canada right now and the cost of living has not really gotten out of hand (like Alberta).
Steg and Jammers. That's right $450. Awesome eh?

Terry!!
I love hearing stuff about the "real" lives of my friends here---it makes a more complete picture----we should all take pride in the skills we develop--as we move along our journeys----
In fact when i look back---it's the skills we aquire, that shape our and our families lives--- and where we live-----actually i think I feel a tangental blog coming-----

Right on Rob. Thanks. I like that too when other people let us in on their real lives.
To continue a bit about the $450 house for Steg and Jammers.(I had to get off the computer so my wife could see the photos of the tile floor my daughter did (herself!)
The house isn't much but the lot was good. After gutting the place we decided we could set up a groovy little love nest for about $20,000 in renovations -- still pretty fair price for a home.

an excellent investment, Terry. I bet it's real cozy, too.
Anybody happen to follow another shrewd cat from Canada who wanted to trade a red paper clip for a house? Kept trading up til he finally got it! What an improbable journey that one was. Talk about positive thinking. I think his site is called (what else?) One Red Paper Clip and it may still be active.

Ironic thing is -- because the house was in Saskatchewan the paper clip was worth more!

Ha Ha Ha! Hey Terry, remember I had asked you where Saskatchewan is? The reason was when I was in an alt-country band, our manager wanted to send us someplace where we could get our act together without distraction and tried to make arrangements for us to go to Yellowknife. Just wondered if you could describe it. Didn't look all that exciting from the location on the map.

Never been there, quite remote by some standards, probably as exotic as Tibet geographically and comfortable as Alaska socially.
I think you passed on a great opportunity.

Yeh, Iistened to Jilly V's "Shoulda Married A Plumber" last night.
Great thing is that welding can be the perfect job for a daydreamer. Once all the brainwork and fitting has been done -- start welding and start humming under the helmet.
Can't wait to check out Jilly's "Nothing Lower Than A Bass Player" -- that'll be on T-Shirts for sure!! Band practise tonight tho' it'll hafta wait.
