I'm buyin'!
Last night I finally decided to see what would happen if I clicked that Google Checkout button next to a couple of my favorite songs. After a little number entering session and some password creation, and a few minute wait for the email wit the links to appear I was the proud owner of some mp3's by some fellow indie artists!

Maybe I'm way behind and you're all saying "duh" because you've all bought hundreds of each others' songs (except Bat Lenny's apparently) but I doubt that's the case. I hope not anyway!

I sit at my computer all day with my headphones on listening to IAC stations and I've always wanted to expand that experience to my car. So I'm embarking on a buying frenzy. Well, not a frenzy, I'm starting small, but you have to admit you can buy a lot of songs before the credit card bill gets unwieldy.

Now I can also play these songs for friends who don't have the luxury of listening to their computers all day, who otherwise would never hear you, expanding your exposure even further.

So I'm encouraging everyone to do this. I'm not begging anyone to buy Bat Lenny songs, I won't be hurt if we don't sell any, and I'm not going to buy songs that I don't love just because they are Pipeliners. But if I love it I'm buyin', even if it looks like the artist hasn't darkened the doors of IAC in years.

But might there be a downside? If I buy a song and listen to it in my car will I be less likely to listen to it online, thereby reducing the play count? Something to think about.

Good for you, SketchMeister Stegor! I've had an idea along these lines but it's still in development. Stay tuned.

In the meantime Stegor, if you buy any of my songs and let me know I promise I'll use that money to buy from somebody else...

:)

Hey Stegor/H

I bought about 15 songs last weekend and so tonight I will hit Bat Lenny and Hugh up for some. Stegor, I also only started to buy last weekend and google is actually easier then the paypal system.
Most songs are .50 to $1.00 and so for $10 or even $20 you can get a bunch of great songs.
As I had mentioned before, I am making a CD to play during the breaks at shows but right now shows are dry until late Nov. I will then play the IAC music during the set breaks.
Look for a couple sales tonight guys.
Peace,
Kenyon

That's really cool!

The process seems a bit inconsistent, though. Last night I got my download links withing a few minutes. Today it's been over 2 hours and it hasn't "shipped" yet. Funny how we expect instant gratification these days.

Instant grats for sure!

Last week I was expecting them within minutes without reading what it said and I shot off an email to tech support lol Then realizing what an idiot I was for not reading. It says it can take up to 6 hrs. It will be a little inconsistant but a much smoother process then when I tried to buy with paypal. Google is more connected with IAC then paypal was.
I am at work now so I can't buy until later tonight. I think you guys have a DMD there in which I will buy it.
Peace,
Kenyon

This seems like a good time to break out the great lost indie song story. As some of you might know, the online world is not an infinite one for some indie artists. I'd say since the day I arrived at mp3.com, there have probably been 50 artists that have come and gone, never to be seen or googled again. Some of them were even very high profile at one time or another. There's this one guy I know who was an good musician but a real pain in the ass who was so a part of the scene I never thought we'd lack for his presence, if you know what I mean. Anyway it's been 3 years now and nobody's seen him anywhere online, it's downright shocking. My best guess is that he died, because I can not imagine him just withdrawing from this world completely. It's really a sad thing, but I've known a number of super talented artists who were either too sensitive or had such overblown expectations that they just gave up their music like an old pair of shoes. I always believed if you have the music in you, you can never stop, but it's not true, some brilliant artists do get in a bad frame of mind and can never bounce back.

Anyway back to this story, there was this female artist, she was a friend, as much as anyone could be her friend because she was pretty detached, was sort of a full-fledged misfit, even moreso than any of us. haha Her songwriting was magical and her voice was, while not what you would call pretty, so unique that you could never forget it. I always intended to buy her CD but during my CD buying binges it was a matter of circumstances, like she had taken it off her page to change the cover, or something like that. Anyway one day I hadn't seen her for awhile and I went to her page and it was gone. I have tried for years to find her not only because I miss her but because her one song called "I'm searching", I miss it even more, I want to be able to hear it when I want to. It's one of a kind. But I never bought the damn song and now I am quite sure I'm never going to hear it again.

Don't let this happen to you, ok ? We spend so much time finding songs we love, don't take their existence for granted, cause there is no guarantee you'll have access to them forever unless you buy em and bring em home with you.

Stegor, I think it's great you're getting the ball rolling this way...what I meant was that if you buy anything from me and send me a note letting me know it was you, I'll use whatever money you spent on my stuff to buy IAC songs...rather than buying myself a shot of hooch or a set of strings, or whatever...try to keep the ball rolling, so to speak...

I've had a few ideas about trying to get such a ball rolling, but have been "time-challenged" - this week it has been a cold hitting the family and children home from school (I am stay-at-home-dad-dude)...

As a footnote, I bought the "Warchild" compilation, have engaged in gifting and receiving some freebies, and have bought a few CDs from fellow IACers...so a number of IAC songs and some songs by IAC artists that aren't on IAC reside on my mp3 player...it's always fun to hear IAC folks coming up alongside my classic faves when I shuffle the playlist...

So, kudos to you, and "happy hunting"!

And I know what Padre Tempo is talking about - why just the other day I got my shorts in a twist when I stopped by his page and Walmartville wasn't showing up...!

Rock on!!
H

Regarding what Scott said, When I came to iac I was one of those people who played and recorded in the closet (meaning no one ever really heard what I was doing except a few special friends) When I first came here and saw a million people doing what I thought was kinda unique, I felt like just another grain of sand on the beach, I never realized there were so many awesome closet musicians in the world, I can truly understand how this could make someone feel small and get depressed and want to quit. I have however realized that this is a great place to have great friends with one giant thing in common, music. I believe the fact that you can jam with someone from the U.K. or freakin china and not even get out of your seat is historical. I have already learned so much from friends here and I no longer feel like a single grain of sand but more like part of the beautiful beach of sounds.
I think this will truly cause new music to evolve differently.
I can however understand how someone could give it up. Fortunately its in my blood and I will still be bangin on keys or drums and playing a guitar with arthritic hands in a wheelchair if need be.
Spread the love baby
Spread the word
Spread this world of music
Ask someone to do a colab today.
Music is life
Don't be dead inside.
John

---This is like stage 2---------for us at Silverwood it was such a buzz to actually have made a sale-------------one sale!

Stage 1 was getting to know all you guys and to see where we could fit in, show our music and keep communication going--------listen to our peers awesome songs and put them on stations.

Stegor, each time you buy a song from IAC you are giving an Artist a big wink of approval, as Kenyon did for us ---------------!!

No chocolate , no sushi------we will be buying also.

keep the flow of sales moving, make someone smile!

Hey Everybody:)

Happy Weekend! I will be back tomorrow late, as there is a mini show to do. I have been wanting to buy songs for quite awhile. I actually think you all should raise it to a dollar per song. You may want to wait tho, its up to you. For me buying 5 songs at a buck for this great music is super cheap !
Have a great weekend
Peace,
Kenyon

Buying someones tune is much more a tribute to the artist than a click counter that ultimately can be manipulated with.. where the sales count cant..

So if the question is between buying or clicking I think youre on the right track taking the tracks to your car!

Cheers,
And have a frisky day,

Thanks to everyone here for the great comments - and thanks for joining in the buying trend. I put together this great compilation cd I'm spinning in my car. It's just so cool to hear it away from the computer. Makes it seem so much more real and I can appreciate it on a new level.

One thing I noticed is that a lot of the songs I want aren't available for download, either because the artist has removed them or they are just not downloadable.

Still, lots more to buy - I have this huge stack of blank cd's...

I've had such a good time finding all this great music here from all you good folks that I started a station just so I wouldn't lose any of you. I enjoyed the mix so much, I picked up all that were available on my playlist so I could turn my friends on to IAC. That's when I noticed Silverwoods' excitement at having sold 1 ( 1 !?!) download and the generous posts by Hugh and Stegor and started thinking the checkout might be the most under-utilized facet of this experience.
Anyway, I figure if I like the song enough to post it to my playlist, I like it enough to purchase a copy of what I add. "Pay for play", as it were....and at bargain basement prices. I'm up to four stations........so far.
Thanks for makin' me smile, y'all.
