Stegor's Rock Star Scribble Corner
Thought I might try to provide a bit of visual entertainment in the form of some rock star charicatures/portraits/scribbles/doodles... Here's my first entry:

Not promising anything, but I consider requests!

hahaha - There's no denying Stegor's talent, but you've got some talent yourself, Bro...I find it hard to believe that's your first portrait - very nice work, I'm impressed. Shall I pop it up as my profile pic for a spell? As long as you don't add a "LLAARREE" tattoo to my forehead...LOL!
I'm DEFINITELY going to have to get back to finishing my song "I'm a Legend (In My Own Mind)"!!!

Maybe Steg doesn't want to blow his own horn but it appears that many of you don't realize that art is what he does for a living. Steg is a commercial artist who prepares artwork for financially significant businesses and does quite well at it (by his own admission) -- trade shows, displays, etc.
Heck with the portrait Steg, can you just lend me a few bucks (minus the one I owe you for the Zappa sketch)?????????????

Jo Ellen

4/17/2008 6:16:34 PM
Well it doesn't suprise me and I think it's cool that he would throw us a doodle or two. I am serious about buying a portrait for my own use. Thanks for letting us in on the info. :-)

Stegor

Thanks Terry - The truth is I make a comfortable living with my talent. But I am frustrated. I mentioned it in another blog - I feel like I'm Jimmy Page writing jingles for Target. I sold my soul for bread and butter! When I was a kid I drew and painted for pure pleasure. So when time came to pick a career I naturally picked art because it was what I was good at. The problem is, once I started to do it for a job I no longer got the same thrill from it that I did when I was a kid. But I had a job.
So I moved on to music. There was the thrill! - Because I could do what I wanted, not what some guy in a suit wanted.
In the mean time I climbed the corporate ladder. I focused on each rung as I hoisted myself up, slowly and carefully. I should have looked up - I would have realized sooner that I picked a short ladder. Sturdy, but short. I ran out of rungs. Almost fell off the top.
Now that I'm up here, though, I can see all the other ladders. Some are shorter, some are taller. The problem is I have to climb all the way down this one in order to start over on a different one.
So now I'm constantly trying to bounce this ladder across the room, without tipping it over or falling off, so I can get one foot over on a different one. It doesn't even have to be taller. I just want one that has my name on it!
Well, anyway, thanks for reading my ladder story. And thanks for the tremendous response! Sheesh - I was just gonna throw up a couple of quick sketches when I had a break between jobs. Now I'm having fun!

Stegor, what you just wrote is brilliant...almost Suessian in a way, well, the ladder part. It's a bit sad, but at the same time refreshingly more honest and without pretention. Most times than not...folks that condemn others for selling out were never really given the opportunity to prove otherwise. And who could judge really ...jeez...everyone would prefer to make a living at what they do and produce something as excellent as you.

Steg:
A friend of mine in Thunder Bay (just north of you) is an artist named Shawn Randall. He does architectural drawing, but like you finds he needs more to satisfy his soul. He has done quite a bit of fine art as well -- some of it still has a little of the architectural-technical-drawing quality and others are quite remarkable.
Anyway, the city held a competition to design a site on Polar Point on Boulevard Lake to celebrate their centennial. Shawn's proposal won and this has opened up a whole new thing for him.
He bought a plasma cutting torch and began making pictures in steel. Really good stuff. I'm amazed at his natural skill with the torch. He did the boreal forest theme at Boulevard Lake as well as some huge fish on the new bridge to Mission Island. And if you cross the border at Pigeon River there is a nature trail at the tourist info building that leads to Lake Superior where you can see my favourite -- a scene of Cloud Bay with horse-drawn logging and the community on the shore. Excellent perspective on a sheet of steel.
If you feel energetic there is a short hike on the other side of the highway to High Falls (also worth seeing) where more of Shawn's work is on display.
Go for a drive some day this spring -- you'll love it. You know how beautiful the North shore of Superior is. Debbie and I have to go back to get the rest of our stuff out of the house I just sold. Maybe we could even meet for lunch (I'm buying) And I'll give you the buck I owe for the Zappa sketch.
I mention this as another break-loose story of a fellow artist -- very much like what you're doing with your music.

Hey Stegor- Can I borrow your ladder? Just for a day. I would like to do some shopping in NYC.
In all seriousness- I think it's a tough spot because the grass does seem greener under someone else's ladder. My father taught me there is always TIME to fulfill your dreams, so whenever you are ready change is always a possibility.
In the meantime, enjoy the view!
