Well they might be overrated for you and me but for some folks they are a lifetime's work. I think once you start it's very addictive. And sadly it often starts after a drinking binge or to fit in with your peers. I blame professional footballers!!!

I used to think of tatooing as a form of self mutilation but I've come to see it as just another form of self expression. I've seen some great ones and some terrible ones. I never got one and never would but I don't judge people who do. To each his or her own!

Saying "tattoos are overrated" is like saying "Music is overrated." You're dismissing an entire art form in a single, broad stroke.
Now, I don't have any tattoos (I could never think of anything I wanted on my body for the whole life), but I definitely appreciate some of the artistry that goes into them. Not an easy medium to master. My wife has 2 and one of them is beautiful; the other is just kinda okay, but I love it because it's a part of her.
It's maybe not your bag o' weed, but don't be dismissive. It's art.

perhaps for you, but for me they are the homage to/a memory of something/someone meaningful to me. I have a G-clef tattoo on my forearm and I'm planning another tattoos and there's a history behind each tattoo. My only condition is that tattoo must be thought over, not something made thoughtlessly, under influence, but that's just my personal opinion and preference and if someone has a tattoo made under influence and doesn't mind, then I accept that. Two weeks ago I lost somebody who meant the world to me and I plan to have a tattoo related to that person - then I will feel like he's still close to me, like he's never really gone. Our bodies are canvas and I like how people decorate their canvas with interesting images. They turn their own bodies into a story.

I more or less agree with you Traeshy, as I think most are Trashy.
Nonetheless, Monicka's approach seems well-thought out and balanced. I don't see her marring her whole neck and half her lovely face with these.
When my youngest sister (11 years younger than me) married her first husband, he had an earring. He also was a big, tough, muscular army man. My sis asked me, "what do you think of guys that wear earrings?" and I said, "I think they are younger than me." She then said "good answer" to which I retorted, "were you testing me or something?" LOL; true story!

I have one tattoo on my body and it is a picture of a rat holding an M-16 rifle with a caption that says "Never Say Die". I got that tattoo in 1970 when i was given my honorable discharge from the Navy. The River Rats was the unit I was in on the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. "Never Say Die" was one of our mottos. I got the tattoo in order to remind me of the many friends I had that did not make it back from our missions. Some guys were getting stars on their body to represent each man that died, Instead of that, I had a gold star put on my front tooth and everyday when I brush my teeth I am reminded by that star about my fallen comrads. I never got another tattoo because that shit really hurt and I am not into pain. But, yeah, a lot of tats have serious meanings for people. A lot of my martial arts associates have tats that honor their specific styles and belts. I once dated a girl who had a tat above her vagina that said "if you made it this far, you must be special." It had an arrow that went all the way down to her crevice. I thought that was quite impressive because of the amount of pain she must have endured to get that. But yeah, musicians in general seem to have a strong affection for tats. I have known some that looked more like pirates than musical artists. Strange phenomena!

When I'm aloud I want a tattoo of harry potter but my Mom says no because I would be sorry when i dont like him I dont think i would

I don’t have any, but I like them.
People have tattooed themselves for as long as there have been people. It’s probably biological by now. In the overview of history it’s probably less natural to have none.
